I have a coolermaster 500, it has 2 12v rails at 16a

Can it handle a 4850 or 9800 gt?

I heard that the 4850 needs 18a on 12v but since I have 2 12v rails is that ok?

Also the terms probably sound a bit weird, I'm not too familiar with talking about power requirements

Edit: this is Hobo.

I actually posted that, realized it was her account, logged out, logged into mine and then told her what happened
She then logged out of my account, logged into hers, edited the post and logged out
For some reason she doesn't want people think she knows anything about computers?!

Anyways I've done some digging and trolling computer forums and had 2 people say it'd be good to go so I'm gonna go for it. Hopefully the computer doesn't melt

No. My nerdiness ends at owning 8 Star Wars t-shirts and having a lord of the rings tattoo.

So help would still be appreciated because if this computer melts down it's my money gone. :( <3

how about investing some extra money for a bigger power supply, and a better graphics card? gtx 580 and the new ATI series are out sooooo the older, but still awesome cards are getting cheap.

Because my power supply can handle a 4850, replacing the power supply adds another 60$ to the cost and getting an even better video card would mean that the processor has to be replaced and another gig of ram has to be added to prevent bottle necking

This thread is like a conversation with yourself. I keep confusing the two accounts. Not the people, obviously, but the accounts.

Ugh. Go for it mate, if the nerd forums agree, you're golden.

I don't really see a power consumption problem for the 9800GT. The 9800 GTX only uses 110w at peak output and the GTX+ uses 140-150w. The GT uses less...you should be fine.

I don't really see how having 2x 12v rails that are rated at 16a would help? Not that I think the 4850 really requires 12v 18a...since it's a 6pin device.

Well my thinking was 1 rail at 16a wouldn't be enough but 2 at 16 should be enough to handle the 18a power requirement. But I wanted to double check

Don't think you can combine them really. But like I said you should be fine, it only requires 1 6pin which only draws 75watts and a 12v at 16a provides more than 75watts.

ATI Radeon HD 4850 System Requirements
o PCI Express® based PC is required with one X16 lane graphics slot available on the motherboard
o 450 Watt or greater power supply with 75 Watt 6-pin PCI Express® power connector recommended (550 Watt and two 6-pin connectors for ATI CrossFireX™ technology in dual mode)
o Certified power supplies are recommended. Refer to http://ati.amd.com/certifiedPSU for a list of Certified products
o Minimum 1GB of system memory
o Installation software requires CD-ROM drive
o DVD playback requires DVD drive
o Blu-ray™ playback requires Blu-ray drive
o For a complete ATI CrossFireX™ system, a second ATI Radeon™ HD 4850 graphics card, an ATI CrossFireX™ Ready motherboard and one ATI CrossFireX™ Bridge Interconnect cable per graphics card are required

I currently have an i5 750 and XFX 4850 being powered by an Antec 450W Smartpower 2.0 (Stock PSU that came with the Sonata 2). I was a little weary when I got the i5 and 4850 that it wouldn't be enough juice but it's been running stable for a year now. The PSU is also like 4, reaching 5 years of running an average of 8-10 hours a day. It's got it's got 15 and 17 amps on the 2x12v rails so what you have should be fine.

I was wondering how long it was going to take before the admins cracked down on our shenanigans :(

@Faval/Sircomflix

Thanks, I'm now completely confident in my psu's ability to handle it
