I can't imagine how Sgt. Duke is feeling right now... I saw the original story about him and Target on Oprah, and he was so happy and proud to have Target with him back home.

Thats because it was on Oprah.

The first part of the article is about the dog dying.

The last line is about the inability to kill the dog.

This is pretty sad, but the awkwardness of that last line is a little humorous.

(I literally just forced my friend to adopt a cat so I wouldn't have to take it to the Humane Society... finding humor in dark times is a gift, not me trying to be an asshole)

I am perfectly capable of understanding human emotion. Infact, I have expressed human emotion plenty of time.

But a dog is a dog, and will always be a dog. It doesn't have thoughts. It doesn't reason. It just follows its instincts/training. I'm glad it saved their lives, but it felt no pain, and there is no reason to be depressed, or sad.

If the person had tortured the dog before, I would have been sad. :|

2/10 for trolling effort.

A dog may be a dog, but the lasting effect it has on its owners and the people around, the comfort and love it brings to humans; is in no way animalistic.

I can't believe I am saying this....The world must be ending..I kinda agree with iargue...Granted its kinda sad, but still. Did it really need to be on Oprah? Why no outrage about a patient lying face down in a hospital for more than 8-12 hours and subsequently died because no one checked on her.

99% of news is about human beings. Is it really that bad that a dog was on Oprah, when 99% of her other guest are people. I've personally never watched Oprah, but I'm sure she deals with a lot of humanitarian feel-good issues. I'm pretty sure she's done several episodes on pedophiles. Also, the instance that you are referring to was also on t.v, and as I recall a lot of people were fired or went to jail because of it.

I'm kinda on iargue's side to be honest. Its only a dog and yes the story is sad but some people die each day without that much attention.

Life goes on.

I tried to stay away from this topic because well, even though I'm gonna be a CDT and I rescue/rehab wolfdogs, I'm completely biased. And I mean that I kind of loathe normal, domesticated dogs due to their inability to survive and that they tend to completely depend on a human but that doesnt mean it's not sad that after all the trauma this dog went through, it ended up dying anyways. You know the other sad fact? I'm not sure this dogs exact case like at what age it bonded with soldiers or if it had a foster before being handed over so im speaking in general, but most imported war dogs would be happier staying in the middle east anyways. Despite the shorter life span, it's all the dogs know.
Not too mention, most people have no clue how to handle a distressed dog, and these dogs are as emotionally damaged as you can get due to being brought to completely new surroundings so this dog will be stressed his entire life and possibly fear bite and be put down anyways. Thats no way to live, and the fact that the dog had been escaping only tells me that it was unhappy being cooped up and was having a hard time adjusting to his new life.

And on the note that a dog has 30 days to be euthanised, that only matters on the capacity the shelter can hold, the condition of the dog, the behavior of the dog, whether or not the dog has a microchip (unregistered/invalid registration because this tips off that the dog had an owner at one point) and the funds the shelter is receiving.
