It depends which version you're watching. If you're watching that "remastered" stuff then chronology because they stuff some things at the end that only make sense if you've watched it from movie 1

Other than that you should watch it by release date because in episode 4 they actually explain what's going on more than they did in episode 1

Release date. You might not get to them to watch the originals if you start them off with the prequels.

I agree with this. Not much motivation to sit through every episode esp after watching episode II. Blech!

Release order! Like what others had said, 1,2 and 3 are terrible. And a painful way to introduce someone to star wars.

More like a painful way to waste about 8 hours...

By release date. No one wants to watch something in glorious 21st century 1080p and downgrade back to 80's style graphics.

I agree with this, but I think another point is worth mentioning.

There are a lot of references made in 1, 2, and 3 that would kind of go over the heads of someone who had not seen 4, 5, and 6.

Not enough to make them unwatchable, but enough where the experience is better if you had seen the original three.

Not everyone hates all things vintage or old Posted Image

I would go as far to say as the average person would agree to watch the original trilogy given its reputation.

Show your friend the original classic ones first. It might be weird change from 4,5,6 graphics to the classics =p

Episodes 4,5,6 imo really take away the greatness of the originals :(

EDIT: The random order option would be hilarious haha

In my opinion, showing Star Wars by release date is most appropriate.

I think you confused the numbers. 4, 5 and 6 were the first to come out. 1, 2 and 3 (hence, the prequel) came out after.
