As title says. Issue: Plug in to power supply, lights come on, lights go out. Router dead. Unplug, repeat.

Well there isnt anything that you can do. It turns itself off because of an internal failure. Which means its probably completely broken.

Best bet is to leave it unplugged for a long period of time and try again.

If you are looking to go the extra mile in salvaging it, or just want to learn something new, you can connect a serial port to the router and view what's going on in closer detail than just examining a bunch of lights and guessing what they mean :p.

This technique is very useful, especially when you think you've bricked your router :p.

If you are using a router you received from your internet service provider, toss them a call and they should replace it for you free of cost.

The wrt54g seems to have hordes of issues. I agree that it'd be an internal issue. If you do get a new one, there are a few newer models from linksys and cisco that aren't nearly as buggy. When was the last time you updated your firmware? When I updated mine, I was having the sludgiest connection (normal speed is probably 16 mbps, but I was getting like 2.5 mbps). I had to reset the whole network and replace every key and re-enter them into all of my devices. That thing is a pain.

I've had the WRT54G2 since 2008 without any issues.. Really though, it looks like you're going to have to shell out $50-$60 for a new one.. I'm not sure what else you can do about that other than replace it.
