I want to learn java instead of vb.net. Even my vb.net teachers recommend java. I heard from sockopen a few years ago this forum was adding tons of tutorials. I searched for them and couldn't find them.
Where are they?

advice?

Java was my first language, then vb.net. I would recommend vb for quick coding solutions and skip Java in favor of C++ instead.

Would someone compare and contrast java and c++?

Advantages and disadvantages of both?

I heard it was the hardest language.

I thought this forum was dedicated to java? Am I thinking of another forum?

We use Python almost exclusively.

All programming languages are similar.
I'm assuming that you've learned C++, and are trying to learn java.
You will still have similar things like for/while loops, etc.
The main change I feel is learning about classes and the format of java VS c++

No, I sort of know vb6. I am converting to vb.net now and having small doubts.

I just want to know if I should stick with vb.net or move to java, c, c++, or c#.
I am planning on doing applications. Most likely as a hobby. I may do some games but not certain.

If you do switch, go with java.

The first thing I thought of was. You do realize this is a neopets website right? o.0

As for java. It's the first and only program I've learned. I've heard lots of praise for c++ though. If you want to design your own games Flash might be better for those purposes imo

Personally I'd learn C++ or Java. These Basic and .NET languages really pamper you with the Syntax and IDEs. While you may be able to achieve the same result, I doubt you'd learn as much.

As for Python; again, personally I wouldn't want to use it as my main language, but I find it to be a great tool for coding small, quick applications.

One thing which might influence your decision is the kind of things you're looking to develop, for example, if you think you might one day be interested in making apps for Android (which I'm getting increasingly tempted by) you'd want to look at Java whereas if you wanted to develop something like a physics engine for games you'd probably be better off looking at C++. Try thinking of the kind of programs you're wanting to create and that should at least help you to rule some options out.

Yeah, I wanted to do some apps for android and iphone. :) I also wanted to to desktop applications. Kind of like a payroll program or something like that.

Also, as for a particular forum having a main programming language is very common. DZ was pretty much vb6 and we are on our way to vb.net. This forum is apparently all about python. nf.net started started with vb.net. It pretty much is defined by what language is most supported here. WHat language the programs are made in and which one has more support.

I appreciate your opinions. I think I am liking java more and more though.
I have been having a really hard time trying to pick a main language since I started out with vb6.

Well if you're looking to do desktop apps and Android apps it would probably be simpler to start on Java (iPhone apps would require you to learn Objective-C, shell out however much on an overpriced Mac and then if you want to publish in the app store pay quite a bit for a developer license too, for me that's not a sensible option :p).
