I am going to Paris France over the summer for a study abroad program in which the professor said that we would not be visiting the tourist hotspots but rather the historical sites and other places in which tourists never see.u

Now during this trip i am also supposed to be doing a report on a certain location in Paris that interests me, Since i have never been there myself i was wondering if anybody had any ideas on interesting places to go. I do believe that the criteria for this is again, no museums or tourist hotspots.

Not only this but i am pretty certain that i should learn some french phrases before i go, was wondering if anyone have any ideas about what is important? This is my first time going out of the united states to a country whose primary language is not english.

Personnellement, j'adore la Seine et l'Ile de France. La région est particulièrementbelle et j'aime lire sur la région métropolitaine et de la culture.

It's a really rich luxurious part of France. I haven't been there myself as I forewent going to France to go to Italy, however, my friends said that is was beautiful.

Also, you will likely always be able to find someone who speaks at least a bit of English. However, learn simple things such as how to ask where something is, and how to ask for metro information.

He's only going for summer, so that's only a couple of months. When I went abroad, I learnt stuff like how to say "Thank you", "Please", "Where is..", "My name is..", "How are you", and names of foods. Think of things you normally say on a day to day basis, and convert these into French.

What are you defining as a 'tourist hotspot'? I mean, if it's worth going to, then there will be tourists.
Maybe you could go to the St. Denis Cathedral in northern Paris. It's just off of a metro stop (the St. Denis stop, even. ) and has a lot of history and interesting stuff, but isn't one of those things that people think of when they think of 'Paris' like the do for Notre Dame or the Eiffel Tower.
Maybe you could do something about the Parisian walls? The old walls that used to surround the city. I'll try to think of a few more things later...

i am going to be there for approximately 26 days, and the professor strictly forbade us from going to places like the louvre museum and the eiffel tower for this particular assignment.

Not saying that we can't visit it during our off time but its not allowed for the presentation we have to do by the end of the program

but yea these recommendations you mentioned would fall under the category of places that he would allow us to do a presentation on i think, he was kinda vague but the guidelines stated that its just not supposed to be as you say "what people think of when we say paris".

ill post a bit of my syllabus later when im at home

What kind of class is it for? That might help to select appropriate locations.

Perhaps I would be able to if time allows for it, unfortunately i think i am limited to stay within the perimeter of Paris for the duration of the program, i do know that several students will be doing additional travel after the program ends, but im not sure if i can participate in that yet.

Why are you going to a place you know nothing about to study history?
Shouldn't you know something about it already, and visit to extend your knowledge more specifically?

Well, my professor was very convincing and made me interested in going to see what his program was all about.

And i do know something about France already, i took several classes that dealt with the french revolution.
But its supposed to be a new experience so honestly it doesnt really matter if it it builds upon prior knowledge or not, Since there is no "real" exams for this aside from several assignments im gona be going with more of a tourists mentality.

Fucking "arts" degrees.

As a holder of an engineering degree, I second this. Arts courses were the ones I actually did the worst in. <_< Meh, to each their own. :p

I lurk. People irritate me. I'm stuck in the middle of all my final recitals and exams EVER and having to sort a load of paperwork for work. Busybusybusy.

In the UK, you'd get a Bachelor of Arts for it. Arts subject.

I'll have a BA and an MSc, does that make me an artistic scientist? :p

Your BA is in something mildly scientific (Urban Planning), so probably not. Do another undergraduate degree in a fine art, and then we can have this discussion again. :p

I'm getting a BMus. Think we may be the only subject besides Law that has its own qualification.

What's funny about that?! I was being helpful for once! :p

Yeah, we have that here too. Music does have its own unique challenges (at least I can imagine so, I'm not musical in the least bit), so I understand where that comes from.

It was the fact that someone didn't know how to quote, and you had to help them with it. Goes to show how people are these days. :p

I think there's a B.Phil too (though we all know that philosophy and music degrees are pretty useless :p).
