So.. We (Boyfriend, two dogs, and me) moved into our new house on the weekend of the 31st of Dec-1st of Jan. At this point I know nothing of the house's history..

Less then three days into living there, I start seeing a weird small black sillouette in the hallway/bedroom/bathroom. I catch it out of the corner of my eye, sometimes it's stationary, sometimes moving. Usually when I see it moving it's quickly "running" (I guess..) out of the room. I always either looked back at it, blink, or followed it around the corner, it's gone.

It's size and speed remind me of either a cat or a small dog. I see it about once a day, usually early morning or right before bed.

After a week of seeing it, my boyfriend decideds to check the house for any holes into the crawl space that might be letting in an actual animal. No holes are found.

After another week, my boyfriend has written me off as crazy and ignores my talk of what I'd come to call "the cat."

This third part needs a small amount of explaination to make sense. In our bedroom we have a crate next to the bed for my dog Odin to sleep in, we put him in it every night and take him out every morning. This part occured on the third week of living there. We're getting ready for bed and my boyfriend turns the overhead light in the bedroom off (lamp on the nightstand is illuminated) and comes toward the bed. He sees what he called "a small black figure moving around Odin's crate, as if trying to get in." He assumes I did not put Odin in his crate to sleep for the night and asks me about it, I tell him I put the dog in. He looks back down at the floor and the small black thing is still trying to get into the crate, as he reaches for the bedroom light again, he says "No, you didn't, he's right he-" and the light comes on and nothing is in front of the crate, Odin is in it and lets out a small cry.

After that moment, we sat up for a while that night and talked about it, he admitting I MIGHT not be that kind of crazy (but still crazy).

The next day, I decided to call the old owners of the house and ask about any animals living there in the past. And the old owner said that not even a month before they moved out of the house (and we moved in), that their Dashund died due to poisoning. It had gotten into some sort of hazardous liquid in the house and died while they were both at work. He was 2 years old (same age as Odin) and his name was "Sparky."

After I told my boyfriend about it (the only time we've said the name "Sparky" in the house) we saw what we're assuming to be him a LOT more for a few days. Still just at the edges of our vision. We're talking a combined total from him and me of 5 or 6 times a day. Sometimes we saw the figure together at the same time.

I'm trying to be as scientific as I can about this, so whenever we see the figure at the same time my boyfriend and I have both sat down and wrote out what we saw. We don't talk to eachother at all until we've written it out, apart from a simple "did you just see it?" Everytime we've come back and compared notes and they've matched.

Sightings of "Sparky" have died down now to about once every other day. I keep notes on my calandar about when and where either I or my boyfriend see him.

Until this morning it had been three days since I'd seen Sparky..

Now, about this morning..

My boyfriend got up for work, and left.. I was still in bed, reading. Every morning when he wakes up, he takes Odin out of his crate, and our other dog Pugsley out of the kitchen (shutting door) and puts them outside to potty while he showers. When he's ready to leave, he puts Odin in bed with me, and Pugsley back in the kitchen..

So yea, I was reading, Odin was fast asleep next to me, and I hear small toe nails walking down the hardwood floor of the hallway that goes from the kitchen, past the bathroom, and to the bedroom. It sounds differnt then Pugsley when he walks down the hall, but it wasn't different enough to make me think something weird. Odin wakes up, and huddles against me and whines. I decide to check it out.. As I was crawling out of bed I said "Pugsley, you're supposed to be in the kitchen.." and the toe nails started tapping faster towards me. As I walked through the bedroom doorway into the hall I saw a shadow moving toward me, toe nails still tapping, for a second... and then nothing and the toe nails stopped. I checked on Pugsley, he was sacked out in his bed in the kitchen.

This is the closest contact I've ever been in with this "shadow." It was only about 2 feet from me. I'm tempted to try to get some of this on photo/video..

That's the end of the story for now. :)

I guess I told this story so that I could get others opinions on our encounters.. And also your opinions on ghosts in general.. Or even stories of your own encounters.. What do you think?

2/14 update:

Yesterday (2/13) we had an interesting encounter. It snowed here, so my boyfriend and I both got the day off work. We put the dogs out to play in the snow (they love snow) and were sitting on the couch talking. I was sitting closer to the hallway and smelled it first.. I thought to myself "WTF, is that wet dog?" and just as I looked over toward the hallway my boyfriend asked "Do you smell wet dog?" We both got up and walked toward the hallway, where the smell seemed to be coming from.. When we rounded the corner and could see down the hall, we saw the same shadow go from inside the hallway into the kitchen.. We quickly ran to the kitchen and shut the door, hoping if it was an animal that it'd be trapped in the kitchen with us..

We spent two hours scouring every surface, crack, and crevice in the kitchen for signs of any place an animal could enter/exit and the only thing we found was a hole where the counter connected to the floor. But I doubt it has anything to do with it, because it was smaller around then the stick off a lolly pop..

Still working to get my hands on a thermal imager or even a regular camera, and to find a way to test my house for EMFs.

Definitely thought this was a troll post for a second and was waiting for you to be like haha joke...

I dont know if i actually believe that ghosts exist but it seems that both you and your boyfriend are experiencing the same thing. I've read articles that say that some people are just really open to believing these things and maybe that's the case with you? Your boyfriend might have started believing it b/c you were so adamant...

I'd guess it's some kind of rabid (but shy) midget rather than a ghost. You could always set up some cameras to confirm if you're crazy or not.

I might have influenced him slightly, but when after a week and he called me crazy, I felt dejected and I stopped talking about it. So a good week of no mention of it what-so-ever went by before he saw it..

Who knows though..

Oh, and I did have the house checked for natural gas leaks. None were found and the air tested clean.

I'd guess it's some kind of rabid (but shy) midget rather than a ghost. You could always set up some cameras to confirm if you're crazy or not.

I asked my boyfriend last night if I could set up cameras in the house to try to catch the shadow on film.. We're going to look at a camera this weekend.

Interesting read! I like how you aren't freaked out at all about this. lol

I believe that it is all in your imagination, but if you got it on video I would be slightly more interested (and I would think you were less crazy...) ;p

I'm not the most superstitious person so I would be tempted to doubt you (or think that you're crazy), but anything's possible so your house could be haunted I suppose

But similar to what Waser said, I'd imagine that it's a small rodent or something else instead o: ~

Very cool story, I'd say there's surely something up possibly supernatural...but I think should setup a camera or two around the house and see what shows up on video.

Also did you ever consider naming your dog "Fenrir" instead of Odin? Seems more fitting...

Yup.

You should also look into setting up some kind of Rube Goldberg booby trap to catch the midget in hilarious fashion to upload to YouTube.

My opinion is that yes, spirits are real. I've had encounters but I don't really like to talk about them.
Some people may think you're crazy but I don't think so.

Anyway, on your situation...

It sounds like Sparky just likes to visit his old home.
Dogs are even more sensitive to spirits than people, and it sounds like your dogs are noticing it too.
Nothing to really worry about though, Sparky sounds harmless.
He should probably end up visiting less and less as he gets used to not living properly in the house anymore.

Sounds pretty cool. I like ghost stories - they're fun. I know there are usually valid explanations, like infrasound at the top of the panic range, blah blah blah, but that gets in the way of my enjoying a good scary story.

I don't have any proper stories of my own. I mean - one time when I was walking home at about 3 in the morning, lagging behind the rest of the group talking to a friend, the street light went out just as we reached it. Fine. Then it happened a second time. Then there was a noise like - man, have you played Silent Hill 2? Know that screechy, raspy sound of Pyramid Head's sword dragging on the floor? (If not, imagine nails on a blackboard.) We heard that exact noise (at least, according to my drunken ears, and everyone else present lacked my excellent taste in games and thus cannot verify) as a third light went out on us. So we screamed like a couple of inebriated teenage girls (which we were) and ran like the wind (which we were not).

But this is the problem with true ghost stories. They have a boring ending. Someone is alone, and scared, they hear a spooky noise, and then nothing happens! It sucks. It's anticlimatic and, life, if you're listening, it's really bad storytelling. So, let's change that.

There was no use running. We found ourselves trapped in a foggy doppelgänger of the town we had once known, doomed to endure bad voice acting and unnecessary cameos of fan-favourite characters.

One of my friends has tried several Acme products and has only bad things to say about them, no idea why he keeps using them though.

As for your ghost, I dunno. I'm a hard fact kinda person. But, I'm open minded. How cool would it be for ghosts to exist? Eh?

Anyways, you should set up a bowl of doggy food under a crate with a stick and a string and catch it! :3

I thought the same thing at first, but when I say small, I don't mean mouse. If it's a critter, we're talking raccoon/possum sized, unless somehow we have the lighting needs all over our house for a mouse to cast a shadow larger then a loaf of bread. We checked the house thoroughly for any entry points but couldn't find anywhere where an animal of that size could get in. I'll mess around with some small objects and light sources to see if I can re-create the shadow using a mouse sized item.

I originally wanted to name him "Orion." He wouldn't answer to it, but I liked the idea of a name starting with "O"... Shortly after giving up on Orion I noticed that Odin has a very confrontational personality, and tends to fight with other males, he also tends to be the leader in a group of dogs despite being only 8lbs.. And so I started researching mythology, in the Norse stories Odin is the god of War, as well as their leader. Also, Odin is a breeding quality stud, he already has a son who is kept by a good friend named Thor. Luckily the god Odin in Norse mythology has many children, so we'll have many names for offspring. :p

If what we are seeing is "Sparky" I seriously doubt he has the ABILITY to cause us harm, much less the desire to. :p I'm not worried about it, and if it is him, he's welcome to stay.
He's buried at the back of our property.. Does that affect anything?

Haha. My boyfriend said we should set up a bowl, toy, and bed in the hallway (where we most commonly see the shadow) and see if we can catch something on video.

Why be freaked out? XD I don't think it has the ability to hurt me..

And also, after a really traumatic childhood, I had to learn of a way to get over things and not be scared of certain things anymore.
Now, instead of fearing something, I become obsessed with explaining it or figuring it out.

Have you had the carbon monoxide levels in your house tested? You said there were no gas leaks, but I've read in the past that a consistent level of carbon monoxide present that's even just above normal can cause perceived hauntings, because it can change visual and auditory perception. Low level carbon monoxide exposure also results in frequent headaches and occasional dizziness. A home detector might not pick up on a level low enough to affect you but not high enough to cause harm, so that's the first thing I'd get checked. If your furnace is old or hasn't gotten maintenance in the past year I'd get that done as well, or if the home has a fireplace or water heater that runs on natural gas.

If it is that, it might explain why your boyfriend started seeing/hearing the figure after you told him about it - there's a lot of power in suggestion, and he and the dogs would be affected by CO. It might also explain why the encounters increased in frequency after you spoke to the previous home owner, as speaking to her would have validated what you saw or thought you saw, and now you've come to expect it, so your brain is consciously or subconsciously on alert for anything perceived as out of the ordinary.

I think anything is possible. I've sometimes felt someone sitting on the corner of my bed when I'm alone but being half asleep I probably imagined it. I like the idea of (nice) spirits.

He's buried at the back of our property.. Does that affect anything?

Well, I suppose you have to be thankful that it's only a dog that drank poisoned water or something, and not a child that died in a grisly murder.

Then there are things that are beyond science and cannot be explained by it, even a lot of scientists admit that.

To be honest, I'm not sure. I think his visitations would have more to do with the fact that your home was his home.
