First off, I'm not against any particular sexuality, gender, religion, race, whatever. I know the opinion is popular in sociology that everyone judges people by those aspects. If I do this, it is uncontrolled through my subconscious. When listening to music however, I take lyrics with a grain of salt. A lot of music I listen to doesn't even have lyrics, is in a different language, or you can't even understand the lyrics. If something appeals to my ear, I don't care if they're saying "Electromanio is a giant faggot who wants to fuck me in my ass," I'll listen to it.

Here's my favorite song as of right now:

if you can't bare to listen to it (you wont offend me) here are some lyrics in it:
"all you mother fuckin bitches suck my dick"
"i'mma fuck yo bitch nigga, i'mma fuck ya hoe nigga"
"i'm fuckin on that bitch, and then I make her strip"
"fuck a bitch in her face, like a boss"
"give me head like a hoe, like a pro, like I know you a hoe"
"b-town boy with them tiny pants just like a faggot"

I'd like to hear other's opinions on this. I've felt this way and argued this way for years. In most real life arguments, I get shut down with "Oh this is so compelling coming from a white heterosexual male." I can't really say that statement is equally as sexist or racist as some of the songs I listen to, but it is frustrating for my opinion to not be valid on the subject. If someone HAD to agree with EVERYTHING the artist thought or believed, they would have absolutely no music to listen to. I hear people making these arguments at music festivals, when they're spending 200$+ supporting these "sexist" musicians when most of their lyrics are just fun or satire/hyperbole. Do you guys think these type of lyrics have any real danger of promoting serious racism or sexism?

I'd say the vast majority of people choose music based on how catchy it is, not the quality of the lyrics.

I'm not offended, but I think it shows a lack of songwriting ability.

The joys of being apathetic, if I can enjoy the beats, I can more or less enjoy the music.

Unless they have some ear ravaging vocals, that might change my opinions.

I don't know what you mean, I can totally relate to "all you mother fuckin bitches suck my dick."

"fuck a bitch in her face, like a boss" .. A man after my own heart. *swoon*

Bone is right on the money. I'm lyrically inclined, so I'd take Townes van Zandt or Joanna Newsom over any current popular music. Though they aren't super easy on the ears, especially Joanna Newsom. Took me two years to be able to get used to her...um screeches

FROM THE TOP OF THE FLIIIIIGHTTTT
The first time I listened to her I recoiled in terror. But yeah, good lyrics can make bring someone with an uh...unique...voice to greatness.

I wouldn't say it shows a lack of ability, you're always gonna get people rapping about fucking bitches. Take this song for example, it's a whole song dedicated to it, but I wouldn't say Biggie has a lack of songwriting ability.

Another example would be Charles Manson. The man has murdered and sodomized kids and women. His body count is 7 or so, but makes amazing acoustic music. I've listened to and thoroughly enjoyed his music, but obviously would never even want to look in his general direction.

Kats, I'm having a hard time figuring out your actual opinion on the subject haha. I'm assuming you're not too fond of the song I posted, but I'm sure there's some music you listen to that may not be as outright offensive as Lil B but almost.

EDIT: Also, rap isn't the only genre that has had sexual lyrics to it. I know no one has said that specifically yet but so far that's all of the examples. Dubstep has it, Rock has it, Metal has it, etc.

Haha yeah on pandora whenever a song of hers started I was like "NEXT."

Decemberists' cover of Bridges and Balloons was palletable.

Ys is just a great album to get into.

There's a difference between killing people and writing songs about killing/raping/etc people.

Even if you'll always have that kind of song, you can demand better structure to it than

"Imma insert my gizmo into yours woo woo woo"

That's very true. I guess that was a little off topic, but more or less pertaining to whether or not the artist's view have any effect on your music taste.

lyrics
I believe this is true, as i often listen to genres sycuh as k pop and j pop without really knowing what they're saying. The lyrics could be sexist for all i know, but i dont mind it, cus im not listening to the music for the lyrics

they have as much risk as some video games that caused murders , or sarah palins statements...i guess

jokes are just unfunny if they don't offend some one ...i remember Ahmed the dead terrorist (btw i'm Muslim ) and when he maid jokes about jews and catholic priests his handler told him he can't make jokes like that ...the situation was funny but it reflected a truth

...there are a lot of things you can't say or do anymore because it offends someone ....things can get extreme and stupid quick.

Mostly in music, when their is sexism that I notice, I think it's hilarious.
For instance, one song I've been listening to a shitton lately,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uYg0m0hjgQ

Lyrics in there say "Bitches fall in love, bitches love the rough sex. Slap her face fuck her in the butt , bitches like to know their place and how they need to act," which when I first heard it, I laughed my ass off.

I feel as though "sexist" lyrics are simply a device to attract idiots to your music, and an excuse for raunching up music videos. It's all business.
