I'm not sure if cedar works this type of stuff, but the only reason I'd go with that is if the smell is preserved.
Does the hardness of the wood affect the sound?

I love the smell of cedar.Mahogany all the way. Tough, hard, durable and has a fantastic color.

I would think the wood type affects sound, but only because it does in musical instruments, right?

I figure a soft wood would absorb the noise so most of it projected outward from the speaker. Although the difference would probably be negligible to the human ear.

I wouldn't want to torture the animals with sub-par audio though.I figure a soft wood would absorb the noise so most of it projected outward from the speaker. Although the difference would probably be negligible to the human ear.
