The UN General Assembly has voted to grant the Palestinians non-member observer state status - a move opposed by Israel and the US.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas told the assembly the vote was the "last chance to save the two-state solution" with Israel.

Israel's ambassador to the UN, Ron Prosor, said the bid "doesn't advance peace - it pushes it backwards".

The assembly voted 138-9 in favour, with 41 nations abstaining.

Hundreds of Palestinians celebrated on the streets of Ramallah, in the West Bank, after the result was announced.

'Birth certificate'

"Sixty-five years ago on this day, the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution 181, which partitioned the land of historic Palestine into two states and became the birth certificate for Israel," Mr Abbas told the assembly.

"The General Assembly is called upon today to issue a birth certificate of the reality of the State of Palestine," he said.

Mr Prosor said "the only way to reach peace is through agreements" between the parties, not at the UN.

"No decision by the UN can break the 4,000-year-old bond between the people of Israel and the land of Israel," he said.

Opponents of the bid say a Palestinian state should emerge only out of bilateral negotiations, as set out in the 1993 Oslo peace accords under which the Palestinian Authority was established.

Speaking after the vote, the US ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice, urged the Palestinians and Israel to resume direct peace talks and warned against unilateral actions.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called the vote "unfortunate and counter-productive", saying it put more obstacles on the path to peace.

Symbolic milestone

The Palestinians are seeking UN recognition of a Palestinian state in the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem, the lands Israel captured in 1967.

France, Spain and Norway were among those urging the General Assembly to raise the Palestinians' UN status. Germany abstained.

While the move is seen as a symbolic milestone in Palestinian ambitions for statehood, the "Yes" vote will also have a practical diplomatic effect, says the BBC's Barbara Plett, at the UN.

It would allow the Palestinians to participate in debates at the UN and improve their chances of joining UN agencies and bodies like the International Criminal Court.

Last year, Mr Abbas asked the UN Security Council to admit the Palestinians as a member state, but that was opposed by the US.

Mr Abbas was much criticised by many Palestinians for remaining on the sidelines of the conflict earlier this month in Gaza and efforts to achieve a ceasefire with Israel.

His Fatah movement, based in the West Bank, is deeply split from the militant Hamas movement which governs Gaza.

Gaza's Prime Minister Ismael Haniyeh said in a statement sent to the BBC that Hamas' "support for the UN bid is based on the "rule of non-recognition of the occupier... and the right of Palestinians to return to their homeland".

I didn't see that one happening...good news for the Palestinians anyway despite America and Israel trying to block it.

Neither did I. This puts them on the same stage as the Vatican (which also has non member observer state status). As the Vatican is actually the smallest country in the world (yes it's inside italy, but it's not actually part of Italy.1929 by the Lateran Treaty, established the Vatican City as an independent sovereign city state)

65 years ago today, Israel was just happy for being recognized of their right to a state, despite the tiny size. The arabs were not ready to hear about it... And today they think that by unilateral actions they will get somewhere ... There is no difference between then and now. Today despite the desire for peace of the State of Israel, there is a desire to kill on the other side. So do not be surprised, if like then, today, a Palestinian State ... will not be established and will not be. They need to understand that unilateral measures lead them nowhere.65 years ago today, Israel was just happy for being recognized of their right to a state, despite the tiny size. No mention of Israel flagrantly violating international law by continuing to build settlements on Palestinian land? It's not all one sided and the Palestinians haven't really had any other option since Israel has so far refused to negotiate anything other than terms which would suit themselves.

when the british left palestine (the british gave the name) they said that palestine would be divided half jewish half arab ... the jews of course accepted but arabs didn't. and the arabs started the fist war..and since then arabs have been trying to destroy israel. you can't make peace with that..israel would like to exist as a jewish state however palestinians and many other muslims and arabs do not recognize the jewish state of israel. the majority of arabs do not believe in a jewish state. israel has always been a jewish state and has always been occupied by jews.. never by arabs..israel refuses to negotiate because even when they gave sinai and the west bank for peace the arabs kept on firing rockets and killing civilians and committing suicide bombing. arabs didnt really want peace.. how can u negotiate when some wants you dead ?

Both sides are as bad as each other. When somebody is kicking you in the shin it's probably not the best idea to keep poking them in the eye and expect them to stop what they're doing.

The fighting is ridiculous. I'm sure the Palestinians aren't innocent, but I just feel dirty every time America blindly sides with Israel. I'm somewhat pleased about this upgraded status. Whether you agree with them or not, the Palestinians deserve to be represented as a state and not just shrugged off as a violent people. Certainly there are extremists and hatreds on both sides, but at least now they both have an official voice at the UN.

Thank you for teaching me that both the Palestinians and Israelis are acting like children. Except your video doesn't show the fat white kid building condos in the dark scrawny kid's sandbox.

It also missed out the part where the kid, along with several dozen of his neighbours, gets blown up with ultra-modern munitions for throwing stones at the other kid. :/ To attempt to use a crude animation to represent such a complex situation is just insulting to the victims of both sides...

About fucking time. Israel is being ridiculous about this and they've went ahead and built more settlements RIGHT after the vote.

where is the world when thousands of kids and women die in the civilian war in syria? or korea? or iran with their torturing citizens, rapes and executions?! where?? why is there always an issue about israel?
have you seen where Hamas "hide" their weapons? in schools, mosques, civilian houses.. so you tell me how to deal with something like that? let them keep bombing israel because they use their citizens as human shields?
Hamas threatens their citizens that if they leave and run away they will be murdered..
i wish throwing stones..sending children with explosives on their bodies committing suicide killing jews for the sake of wiping them off of the earth? please..

I don't recall anybody saying that any of those things were fine so I'm not sure why you mention that at all.

As I said, both sides are as bad as each other but you seem to think that it's only Palestinians who are the aggressors while Israel is a completely innocent victim with no blood on its own hands. On one hand you've got Palestinians hiding weapons in civilian areas and committing suicide bombings and on the other you have Israeli snipers shooting unarmed and non-threatening children and using white phosphorus in civilian areas. I don't really see how you can claim that one side is any worse than the other when they're both committing atrocities and killing innocent civilians.

If you read this one you'd see that it was actually veteran Israeli soldiers who made the claims, not Palestinians.

It's a shame so many countries chose to abstain. You know they really wanted to vote in Palestine's favor, but were pressured by us to back off.

I'm just glad Palestine's getting some recognition. Israel has the US to hide behind in every step, so it's time that Palestine is in motion to have it's own say as well.
