I figured it might be worthwhile to make a guide for this avatar as there seems to be quite a few people interested in the best methods to obtain the elusive Kelp avatar.

 

Obviously this is not law, but using the below method I have managed to get the avatar on all of my accounts in no more than 2-3 attempts.  Luck?  Most probably, but here's a guide for you anyway.

 

 

Bon Appetit Avatar

 

 

Getting this avatar is random when you dine at the Kelp Restaurant and take home some leftovers.

 

Something to remember:  This avatar IS random, this guide is purely to increase your chances of obtaining it... hopefully.

 

• ​First things first - You need to ensure your active pet is 'Bloated'.  Feed it until it can't eat any more or even easier - put it in the NeoLodge.  There's no point entering the restaurant if your pet is starving.
   
• Head over to the Kelp Restaurant and once you have gained entry the Uni waitress will explain to you how things work.  There are four menu's to choose from Appetisers, Main Courses, Desserts and Cocktails. You can choose one item from each menu or one item if you prefer.  I recommend choosing one from each menu (the maximum).  Why?  Because we're here for the avatar and the more dishes you choose - the higher your chances of getting left overs are ... obviously.
  
  Choosing your food
  I have listed below the cheapest option on each menu.  It does NOT matter what you choose - so go for the items listed below to save some NP.
  
  Appetiser:
  
  
  Angel Hair Salad or Tropical Fruit Bowl
  13,000 Neopoints
  
  Main Course:
  
  
  Spicy Radish Salad
  28,400 Neopoints
  
  Dessert:
  
  
  Honeyed Horn of Plenty
  12,000 Neopoints
  
  Cocktail:
  
  
  Lemwart Fizz or Thornberry Brew
  7,000 Neopoints
  
  Total Spend: 60,400 Neopoints
   
• Once you have chosen the above menu items - click on 'Eat', which will show you what items you have selected and the total cost.  If you're happy - which you better be.  Click on 'Eat your food'.
  
  Tah-DAH!  
  
  Hopefully your pet will not be able to eat all the menu items and you will be able to take left overs home.  If your pet ate all the items ... N'awww! - Head back to the start and try again.
  
  Be sure to check your preferences page after each attempt as there is no random event to obtain this avatar.

I read also that choosing your lightest pet helps. Is there any truth to this?

No idea, but I got it with a negative statted pet. Which means it was totally bloated and has like 0kg and I spent about 300k on the avatar. 4 tries. I think there's SOME truth to it, but maybe it's also coincidence. /shrug

I wasted 200k, tried the above guide and fed my very bloated 19lb pet. still no avatar. i'm broke now, can't try anymore until i've earned enuf np... it's so easy to spend but so hard to earn...
