Not many details yet, he'll talk about it more during the state of the union on the 20th, but sounds promising.

Only it's not like it is actually "free"...I'd like to see details regarding where the money is going to come from, you know? ;)

Of course not, and of course.

From the article: "Federal funding would cover three-quarters of the average cost of community college, and Obama is asking states to pick up the rest of the tab"

and: "The cost details will be in the president’s 2016 budget proposal, White House director Cecilia Muñoz said."

Federal funding = okay, so are my already immense taxes going to be jacked up even higher? ;)

I don't think so, I'd imagine they would just be put towards this instead of something else (hopefully defense). But we'll have to wait and see.

Trust me, yanks do not pay anywhere near as high taxes in some countries.

I fail to see why so many of you lot are opposed to any form of socialism?

An educated country is surly a good thing? Ya know?

One thing we can agree on finally haha. There is a lot wrong with the way this country runs itself and this would not be one of those things. We need to provide more people with opportunities to learn and grow. The priorities in this country are so fucked

If this were to go into effect this year, it would be just at the right time for me. I'm planning two years of community college before going to a university - mostly due to health reasons. Gotta stay close to home so mom and dad can come rescue me. :p

It's a good idea to do this really whatever situation you're in, unless you're wealthy. Living in the dorms the first two years is an unrivaled experience if you can afford it but otherwise it makes much more sense to get your associates for much cheaper

I am wealthy, tbh, but we've always been a really cost-conscious family anyways, so this would probably have been my education path, anyways. I will miss dorming, though. Sounds like so much fun. Same with sororities. It's like having a group of girls who are required to be my friend.

I dormed my freshman year at Rutgers, that's the only dorming experience I have. But I made two of my best friends that year, and if I didn't have them now it would suck. They live in a different state now since I've moved but I always look forward to seeing them, so if you don't dorm please try really hard to make friends whatever your situation. I wish I had lived on campus longer and if I had the money I would have.

If the college I was going to was a CC, this would have been extremely convenient. :\

He needs to see to it that those who previously paid for it are reimbursed.

I haven't read specifics, but if you drop out or don't complete an associates within a certain time frame, you should be required to pay the money back.

I'll definitely try! It's kind of hard to find people with similar interests as me without using the Internet, but I was blessed with the conversational skills of my mom so I'm lucky there, haha. Thanks for all the advice, Don!

I guess I didn't pay enough attention in school, but I have no idea how to read that chart.

I am with Talbs. I honestly don't think it is smart to have even more people going to college. America has an overeducated unemployed population right now. Learning is good, going to college isn't necessarily good for everyone. I feel it should really only be trade schools. And if you don't finish, or have terrible grades, you should be required to pay back what was given you. Also, let's subsidized graduate loans, rather than pushing everyone to get general degrees. General degrees don't do that much. We are telling everyone to get general degrees in Enlgish, business what have you, meanwhile people getting their Ph.D.s, MDs etc graduate with 200k in student loans.

I'm graduating with student debt and I still fully support this. There are 3 million jobs open because there is a lack of skilled workers available to fill these jobs. The jobs market is growing, however the jobs that are growing requires proficient skills to do these jobs. Skills that require a college education. It's not about the piece of paper it's about learning skills that make you employable. There are regulations, you have to keep above a 2.5 GPA for it to continue being free. This will only cost 60 billion over 10 years, that's nothing compared to the fact that we spend hundreds of billions per year to fund our military.

I think this is great news, especially as a community college graduate myself. It's a great first step toward addressing the rising costs of education in this country. To think that there are schools out there that charge students close to $70,000 (USD) a year is absolutely ludicrous, especially when there are countries with systems out there (I'm thinking mainly about Germany) where tuition is free or worth the equivalent of pocket change.

We spend nearly $600 billion annually to fund the military: we can definitely afford to spend (and even divert) some money to address this issue.

But why target community college, the generally more affordable types of college. Why not reform the entire way post high school education is paid for. I feel like this is just going to flood the market with the "cheaper" degrees (note not calling them poor, useless, etc. but face it community college degrees are generally downplayed, whether thats right or wrong is debatable). This isnt going to help shortages like family care physicians. We need to be giving students loan forgiveness, or loans with no interest, to give everyone a chance not just community colleges.
