But isn't it the year of the sheep? Could some captain explain it?

Anyway, Happy Lunar New Year!

I think it depends on who you ask. In Vietnam, it's year of the goat because it's too hot for sheep or Rams to live there (according to npr). In other places, like Tibet, they call it year of the sheep.

Next year it's year of the money, or ape, again depending on who you ask.

Happy New Year to you too!

I wore a Chinese mandrin collared shirt today and put my hair in a bun for work today. Even though it is a business attire office, most of my coworkers were surprised that I dressed up. One of the supervisiors, Suzie (parents imigrated from China; she looks like an Asian Barbie; super cool chick too!), gave me a big hug and said "Yay! Happy New Year!". It was awesome. ><

I like festiveness and any reason to dress up/different/etc.! LOL

You're not alone, that's confused a lot of Westerners. The reason is that the appropriate Chinese character, yang:

...just generically means "horned animal," so it can translate to either sheep, ram, or goat. Historically it's believed that "goat" was the animal the Chinese probably meant for the Zodiac, since the Han Chinese commonly raised goats, not sheep.

But nowadays people are free to interpret it however they want. And it's very common to see it as "sheep" because I mean... who doesn't love cute and fluffy sheep.  :kirby:

Hope I helped. xD (This is coming from someone who's natively Taiwanese.)

Happy New Year to everyone!

Finally a thread where my signature is relevant.

Happy (arguably belated) Lunar New Year to everyone! Festivities may last anywhere from a couple of days to 15, depending on the culture.
