Are we ("the cheaters") responsible for the current situation?

So in my guild (yes, I still frequent a guild! and it's active!) there has lately been the discussion about all this lag, and glitches, and economy, in short: the current problems Neopets is facing. And someone has mentioned that it was mainly the cheaters' fault.

Somehow the cheater's topic always comes back there. Maybe they know and are giving me hints :p

Anyway, I'll briefly describe what was the popular opinion.

Why? The reasons for this aren't recent as we may think, but they go many years back in the past.

Due to the influence of cheaters, CGers and other 'hackers', a lot of normal and average people have lost their interest in gaining Neopoints, thus staying mostly for the company of others or just abandoning the site. Also events like the Altador Cup have been frustrating, because the presence of organized groups have made it impossible to win "normally", thus spoiling the fun for everyone. You probybly have heard about all the complaints during the AC.

Anyway, of course people are abandoning the site and buying less NC and premium, so Viacom decides to sell, and Jumpstart buys, hoping to bring Neopets back to life. (And, who knows, maybe this will happen.)

Sadly, right now, due to the lag and other problems, neopets is losing even more users and not gaining new ones, so the only users remaining are the nostalgic ones who will stay with the site till the end. And Comcast isn't really able to manage all these problems, who may even be caused by the cheaters themselves, who aren't worried about the long term effects of their actions (I lol'd at this point) and only interesed in exploiting the glitches.

So Comcast isn't even trying and the site will go down soon (see the fired TNT staff).

Of course this is a somehow biased opinion, but it's true that the popularity of Neopets has been going down.

So, what do you think: who or what is responsible for the sinking popularity of Neopets?

It's getting boring. They never really changed from the beginning. Mobile apps, for example. Look how long it took for them to make one (and right when it's about to go down lol).

I wish I could elaborate past saying "no" to the question, but I'll say it anyway.

No.

No.

I'm just glad you made the effort to put a sentence in front of "No."

Also, No.

TNT and whoever happens to own the site. People are leaving because of glitches caused by TNT and the owners (through the site move). Plus, they aren't telling us anything which is making users angry. They were the ones who seemed to focus on NC all the time intstead of everything else, as some users feel, which also angered users. Their app doesn't work for everyone, again causing anger. It feels like they don't care about the site anymore.

They hammered the nails into their own coffin.

If anything things would have been worse off had there not been any publically available cheating. ABers and automation in general are the reason the economy didn't turn into a gigantic shitfest with only one or two people or guilds controlling how valuable (or non-valuable) things were. Things being unobtainable chases more people off than you'd think.

Has any other site completely failed due to cheating? I dont think so, take any gaming platform, any gaming website and you'll still have cheaters. I dont think "cheating" can take down a site, unless you have multiple people "hacking" into their databases doing something malicious.

I don't think cheating is the cause cheating has been around a long time and never caused any issues, it's not coincidence a new company buys it and it suddenly goes to crap.

That wasn't my opinion  I am here because I too was tired of spending too much time and not gaining enough.

Oh nono I know it wasn't your opinion. I was just adding in a counter argument to your guild. My apologies for not being clear.

No I don't think cheaters are the problem. People just like to find something to blame. The real problem was refusing to improve neopets.

There are ways in which TNT can deal with glitches better and dont.

There are ways in which TNT can deal with ABers better and dont (they used to change things all the time)

There are ways in which TNT could have done multiple things better and dont

So in essence we are not to blame.  We have given a challenge to TNT to deal with and they have not done so not our fault if they decided not to IMO.

Don't break. It is your guilt starting to surface. It just feels like they know because you are paranoid and trying to find (any) proof that people are coming after you to the point anything can be "valid" proof. Just relax and act natural or just be you if the guilt is strong enough to make you think people are suspicious about you acting natural.

Also, I'm sure the root cause of the lag is everybody running programs and ddosing the servers with "valid" page requests.

Ghoul catchers on the App Store and FB. I'm not getting the rewards it's saying I'm supposed to be getting. They released an app that has a huge flaw in it. Some users are getting easy NP from it, so they have an advantage over those who aren't getting the rewards.

Personally I think it's largely down to the growth of mobile gaming via the likes of Facebook initially and later the App Store and Google Play which caused a proliferation of free-to-play, social-oriented games which essentially superceded Neopets as a gaming destination. Massive growth in competition + lack of innovation on the part of Neopets results in lower market share and lower activity.

Unpopular opinion: It's whoever is the shadowlord of the company's fault, doesn't matter if they are from Viacom or Jumpstart or your grandma's basement baby, I don't care. They had the choice of either hiring skilled programmers to work hard on adapting to a broken coding frame (which had some undeniable success in the past) or restructure the entire site from a ground up. I think it's a cowardice and a fear of losing money that prevented anyone from picking the latter, but it is ultimately necessary for neopets to grow.

As I can see it, cheaters are the ones that keep the poor sad neoeconomy that's left STILL running, even if now it's just a poor excuse to do it and old habits are hard to die.

And in the past, we (cheaters) used to make TNT work harder to get a better site, of course we always found ways to be even better but, at least, there used to be  WILL to be better and do better for the site.
