Because he thinks Marshall arts with his mates Dave and Danny are sooo cool when they're not. They're useless on the street.

Well my style is Wado-Ryu Karate. :) Mind, there wasn't a lot of choice in the area I'm in. If you're interested, the style name means 'way of harmony' and often uses blocks and counter attack combinations... but I don't know a great deal about other styles yet.

I however am interested in starting Shotokan style at some point... it combines power and flexibility, I've heard. But it's been recommended of me to stay in Wado-Ryu for a while yet, at least until I can take an adult class - though there's nothing wrong with taking more than one style, one sensei I know is an expert in both Wado-Ryu and Shotokan.

They're useless on the street.

A lot of people think that when they've started karate, they have the power to fight with anyone on the street. It doesn't work that way. It is your behaviour that invites trouble from enemies and practising a kata is one thing, but participating in a real fight is another... never attempt to prove yourself by fighting someone... it's not designed for that.

Not, of course, that martial arts aren't a useful skill. They are. But it's foolish to provoke trouble and so on. :)

By the way, why do people keep spelling it 'marshall'? 'Marshall arts' - that's something to do with gigs and concerts and amplifiers and things... O.o

martial arts are for defence . so you should'nt just go out and kick someone with your style. :)

Exactly. But you have to be careful with defending yourself too... if you hurt someone too... 'efficiently', I suppose - especially if you manage to block their attack without being harmed yourself - you're the one more likely to get into trouble!

I practice my own style, which has no name :p   All it consists of is blocking/dodging and then hitting them xD  Works quite well, but of course I am usually fighting people who have no strategy whatsoever.  My main fobecause is to strike with precision, because hitting your opponent in the right spot in the chest can knock their breath out of them, and then you are free to do just about anything.

What I hate it when people cannot accept defeat :p   One time, this guy kept tackling me from behind while I was walking away (after I beat him) and I had to beat him like, three times after that :p   And now his story is that my friends and I jumped him while he was walking to his car, when in reality, he started the fight xD
