Pretty sure this is the hardest viola concerto out there, as there is only one recording of the entire concerto on Youtube. @Keil @Nymh?

Unless you have done great research on viola concertos and either talked to professional violists who strive to play the hardest or you, yourself, played level 7 (or whatever your difficulty scale supposes) viola concertos, I highly doubt a few moments worth of searching grants you the necessary background and expertise to make a heavy statement solely based on the frequency of recordings on Youtube. Not saying that the piece you posted may not be the most difficult, but your train of thought is severely lacking.

Wow, that recording is as old as me!  Honestly it doesn't look that bad, but I only gave a cursory glance in a few spots of the recording.

In my opinion, there is SO much music out there, we can't really ever find the hardest of anything - and it isn't something that can be quantified, really.

We all have our strengths and weaknesses.  I absolutely suck at anything higher than 4th position and I get pissy when I feel like I'm playing the violin on my viola, so I struggle with those things.  Some people suck at double stops.  It's all hard work, but soon enough you get through the piece and realize that there's another waiting to challenge you even more.

I can't speak for Nymh, but I lack the expertise to you give you any sort of valuable input. I quit true technical viola-playing after nationals in high school and in undergrad I was the only jazz violist in my school for all 4 years I was there. Ever since this fall with grad work, I don't have time to open my case except for ventilation purposes. I even played haphazardly today after a 5 hour class to let off some steam.

If you're wondering for my opinion despite my lack of competence in the matter, I can see why your friends would say this is the most difficult piece. Forget the double stops/dissonances/fast parts, the slow parts are torture. The second half is not difficult intonational-wise and rhythmically. Anyone can play the notes, but almost no one can make those notes sound good. There is a certain negotiation that the performer has to make to produce those tones like frequent lane changes, extremely calculated bow strokes, and varying finger pressure on the strings. Good luck to those playing. I imagine they won't have problem playing through the piece with exact counting and intonation, but making the quality high is the real rub.
