Welcome to the site Erie.
Please post a screenshot of your exact problem. Also, I invite you to download all of the required files in Mumei's topic about why certain programs don't work.

The fact that it happens before the program even starts definitely tells me it's a control or .dll problem, both of which are easily solved by navigating around the board, or by using the search function. In my more helpful days, I'd have simply contributed a download link to help you out...but I'm too old and too cynical for that.
Edit: ah what the hell. Try doing the control pad.

darn
Edit: I posted that before I saw your edit

how do you unzip?
I unbutton first.
Then after that, just right click on the .zip file you downloaded and click on "extract to folder" or "extract here" depending on your preference. Then run the .exe from there.

*gets angry* you downloaded a .zip file from neocodex...this .zip file contains the program you want to run. Right click your mouse on the .zip file. Now, click "extract here" from the menu that comes up after right clicking. Now, double click the program you've just extracted (It will have been extracted to wherever you originally saved the .zip file)
