Quite a few game companies have died because of pirating, and that will soon lead to the monopolization of gaming, leading in the forefront, Electronic Arts.

Everything else I get a mix of though. Sometimes I buy, sometimes I download illegally.

I'll download music if I just want something new, or if someone says "hey you should listen to this", but I'll buy it if it's an album I know for a fact I want beforehand.
Software depends. If it's a game, buy it. Unless it's old and hard to get or something, then go ahead and just pick it up online...
But stuff like Photoshop is 100% okay to download. Flash, Photoshop, all that. Why? Because the future of those things thrives on it. They themselves know it, which is why Macromedia doesn't troll sites like newgrounds picking off flash pirates one by one.
These industries rely on the young people that pirate the software to become their future users, and it's not like they even CAN legally buy it in the first place. The prices are outrageous. Pirating it is the only way.

Only things I buy are console games and games I want to play online. Hopefully I'll be getting a mod chip once I get a 360 or PS3 so I'll no longer pay for anything
Do you know where to get a mod chip for 360 because I don't think they've figured one out yet o_0

It's two passages about tw opposing view points.
The first passage is from an artist who argues that it's not fair for people to download songs and to take away earnings from the artist that they deserve. This could lead to the artist not being able to afford a living through the music industry and being forced to take music as a part-time job and not being able to fully do what he loves to do. Etc etc.
Second point.
..Sure they argue that by downloading music the artists are not gaining profits they should be getting. However, studies have shown that since p2p sharing programs have been released the music industry has BOOMED.
Fame = fortune right? So what better way to receive fame then people freely distributing your songs.
The article refers to two types of products: Nouns and Verbs. Nouns are physical things like art, technological gadgets, etc. While verbs are more Ideas.. people like doctors, lawyers, and singers sell verbs.
And when Nouns are pirated.. through the bootlegging industry or whatnot they lose gain.
Verbs work inversely. Free distribution of verbs actually helps these people.
So yeah.. I agree with the second viewpoint. A more convincing argument to me.
But one thing that should not be used as an argument is "They're already rich enough who gives a shit". WRONG. You're not allowed to steal from people just because they're rich So to hobos who are a lot worse off than us, would it be okay for them to steal from middle-class people like us.. just because we're rich enough?

AND I know its wrong, but I do it any way.
I guess it depends on the category too...I download songs if I only want one song and not the whole album. I've never pirated any games, lol im too particular about them. I keep all the boxes and instruction manuals. Software...I'd have to say those are my worst offenses, and the reasoning is purely financial

As for software, same applies. I download photoshop, illustrator and many other apps. Now if the software was released by a independent small developing team and the software is truly worth it, I'll buy it. On the same note, I've tried to replace certain pieces of software with open-source alternatives. For instance, instead of using MS office, I now use open-office. Not the same but good enough for my needs.

i honestly thought this thread was about pirates, and i was getting all geared up
anyways, its not like photoshop doesnt make money, most corporations own tons of copys of one program, enough to distribute free copys to many employers.
