Pirate One who robs or plunders at sea without a commission from a recognised sovereign nation. Pirates usually target other ships, but have also attacked targets on shore. These acts are known as piracy. Unlike the stereotypical pirate with cutlass and masted sailing ship, today most pirates get about in speedboats wearing balaclavas instead of bandanas, using AK-47s rather than cutlasses.

Privateer A private attack/raid ship working for a country, or a person working on that ship. Privateers were licensed to attack and take ships from countries at war with the sponsoring country.

I want to be a privateer because you can do stuff with government permission. I also get to keep the loot I steal.

Hell, I'd get permission from a king/queen/president to raid foreign nations. Then when a nice trade ship from my own country comes my way POP there goes my privateer status and I'll raid anyone I can get.

But don't you see? giving 10% to a Monarch in exchange from them not persuing you? That'd be freaking awesome! And if you happen to catch a ship from your own country every once in a while, who's to say? Maybe they just got shipwrecked at sea?

And once you see a nice little island in the Carribean that you want to claim, you just cash in your chips and go live on a beach for the rest of your life.
