A few things I would stay clear of...

Its all very well to build top end machines for 600bucks, but the reliabiltiy will be abit hit and miss, if I was you I would buy in bulk and get the discounts on better parts. Say your after 10 whole computers, build them yourself is the first option which I would go for, you can always buy from dell or someone but meh building yourself gives you more options..

Now first thing is first, get yourself a budget, its a lovely idea but money is your first objective get yourself a nice little budget, now im from england, so if I wanted to build 10 pretty well spec'd computers and 10 17inch monitors im probably looking at £6000 - £6500 thats a pretty big budget actually, it can be done alot cheaper than that, but im pricing at spending 500 or so on each computer and 120 for a 17inch...

Firstly choose what procs your going to use, since your on a budget I would say go for AMDs there nice procs as well.. (You probably know all of this but im in a typing mood so you can read it or choose to ignor it tongue.gif I dont really mind.) If your going to buy amds, choose to go ALL with AMDS, not a mix and match of the lot that way you can normally get a pretty sweet discount...

Remember if your buying bulk items, its normally better not to buy of someone like newegg, they are probably the cheaper option but if there anything like dabs or ebuyer(UK equivilant) its a bugger to return stuff and they dont like refunds, its better to find a computer reseller around your area or at least in canada.

Cases - Get them all the same, dont get mix and match cases, buy pretty standard cases but make sure there sturdy, and what you really want is the ones with locks on the front of the cases, antec do some of them, mainly because the little buggers that will go in the cafe will more than likely bark about with the cd drives, and you dont want them chucking any old shit in your drives verify CD's first! Its a necessity. You could always go for the more gaming look and get the cases with the side windows, but that requires abit more work and for what effect tongue.gif

Windows/Linux - I would go for windows tbh, because more people are comfortable with windows, which leads me on to licencing, BUY IT! Dont try and install dodgy copies of XP on them its really not worth the risk. If your gunna install it on more than one, windows do a special CD it has 10 copies of XP on it 5 copies of Server 2003 SBS and loads of other crap on it, and its only like £150 well worth it, PM me if you want me to sort you out with a link...

Now I cant really think what else to explain im sure you no enough about computers to build them, just remember try and stay witht he one company if you are buying alot of components, its better because you can keep them on your side there normally really nice people on the phones and dont take there first offer you can normally get them to drop the price a fair bit espeically if you are buying 10 of everything tongue.gif

Good luck if you ever do get it started wink.gif

Sounds like a sweet idea.
But 5 bucks says you'll get some shaggy looking 50 year old guys that come in to look at porn sites.

Well we found an empty space at the Wal-Mart plaza at Bayview and Major Mack. The furthest corner, the end closest to Bayview High School (literally 100meters away), there's a space available.

So if we get it there, people will be coming in for lunch, after-school, before-school, it'll be good business.

Just curious, what do you guys think of these specs for computers and all, I customized:

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 AM2 3500+ Processor
OS: Windows XP Home Edition
RAM: 512MB DDR2 PC4200 Non-ECC Memory (512MB x 1)
Video: GeForce 7300GS 256MB PCI-Express
HDD: 80GB 7200RPM 3G SATA II Hard Drive
CD :52x32x52 CDRW Drive
LAN: Integrated Gigabit Network Adapter
Keyboard: Logitech Deluxe Keyboard Black
Mouse: Logitech Black Optical Mouse PS/2
Sound: Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio
Speakers: Cyber Acoustics 2016 2-Piece Speakers
Monitor: 17" .27 Black CRT Monitor
Wrnty: 1 Year Parts & Labor Warranty

$871.97 CDN (that's for desktop, monitor, keyboard, etc)
(Which I think is good. I checked the reviews for the video card because it was iffy, and it plays recent games with max settings flawlessly like CSS and such)

And we want to start with twenty computers, but might start with fifteen, since everything has to be renovated, and to convince the bank for a loan we can't ask for too much (atm it's ridiculously high).

Shit. That's a ton of money. Don't be afraid to go cheap on the monitors and keyboards - CRT are fine and are cheap as crap, and that's a damn powerful cybercafe PC from what i've seen. Tone stuff down a little. 600-650 per unit would be fine, and maybe 10-15 units. It wont break the bank, and it's equally as effective.

Remember, you've also got to purchase a licence for software that monitors and regulates what your customers access - you dont want some dude running a brazilian cartel from your cafe and have the FBI arrest you for it.

bark spending that much, serious do what i said and buy in bulk, your wasting a ton of money, I would go for xp pro as well, seriously listen to me LOL its not a good idea spending so much, yuou wont need 20 computers to start withh, buy like 10 if business is good and you make your money back then buy more no point having computers lying around, remember you will need a kic ass like probably SDSL so it never drops or goes down, thats like 200 a month.

For the software im willing to write it for you, empty your PM box, and ill send you the detials ive written a program for a cyber cafe anyway which does what you need. Ill post up what it does if your interested

one tip
environment of your cafe is everything^^ ( i own one btw lol )
adding new concept to your cafe is also nice, like there's this lanpub that combines drinking + gaming. it opens for minors from 12pm - 12am where at midnight it will start to attracts those late gamers ( of legal age ). events like lanparty and competition will help rake in additional revenue also. (although we do it generally for publicity =) )
eg. dota
registration fees : team payment / individual
5 v 5 dota = 5 per team
64 teams * 5 = 320
320 * $10? = 3.2k
3.2k - 1st 2nd 3rd prize = 2k? (depeneding on your prize )
2k * 6mths = arnd 12k

2k is actually shit but like i said we do it for publicity=)so if your reason is other den publicity, reconsider your registration fees?

am jus saying..

You first want to consider the prices for:

rent
computers
games
equipment
internet
heat

For that guy it took probobly a a year and so to get people go to his place and get his money back, after then... he stars to make pure money... and if its cold he has to pay money for heat...

Um...
Not to rain on your idea, but a mere 10-20 minute drive (30 for bus) from where you are you can reach a cyber cafe. Toronto is loaded with them.

Edit: Also, you make Richmondhill/Markham sound like such a boring place.

I live on the far eastern side of RH XD.

And yeah, there are cybercafes (especially going south), but the only decent ones I know of are a town over, like PCP in Markham (and well, all the rest on the Hwy7 stretch).

But it looks like we'll be setting up right on Bayview Major Mack, I just called now to check if it's available and if they'd allow a cybercafe and it's a go, and since it's a literal 30sec walk from Bayview High, people needing to waste some time or have fun and eat would be going there before school, lunch, after-school, so they'd be our main customers. Plus it's on the edge of the whole urban sprawling of From Bayview and Elgin -> Leslie and Major Mack. And as long as we keep our prices competitive, people to the north of us, and those close to it from the south, would be going our way instead.

Also, yeah I guess we'll start with 15 computers. The rent of the place is rather steep (but it's right on a major intersection, right next to a school, 1,800 sq ft), so the first and last and renovation and computer and games costs :\..... We're gonna need to loan easily $45,000.

Also I am still looking for other options, and I could buy in bulk and build the computers myself.. but between that and helping with renovating and everything, it's just gonna take too long. :-\. We want to waste as little time because of the lease price especially.. so given bulk parts price and building + spending time on both renovating and comps and $5,800 vs just buying them whole and shipped within 3-5 days.. buying in bulk and building != savings upto $5,800.. plus there's a one year (on-site) warranty on the computer and it's parts too, so if a video card's busted beyond repair because it's fan doesn't run right (therefore no games), they could just ship us a replacement.

Evens out.

I'm still checking other places, though.

Also for those suggesting the specs be toned down, well you've got to consider as a cybercafe, it's gotta now have PCIe, and 64bit because they're the future standards.. and the cpu and vidcards are decent, so it's all good :\.

One thing I will suggest is too find a company who do deals on computers, ring them up dont do any of that ordering on line shite, tell them what you are doing and get them to price a computer up with the specs you want and you wanna buy 15, they will roll over backwards to do it for you. Also get 3years warranty! its like $50 more and its bloody worth it.

I understand your need to buy the computers as whole because its a bitch of a task if you have 15 todo.

You also really need to think out the design of the place and the tables or even table, its always nice to have it nicely spaced between the computers, although its abit of a premium here in england LOL. Yeah and chairs, most office furniture companys have them on sale alot also ring them up and buy 15 just buy them in one go, I got my lether chair for like 30quid from argos in england im sure there much cheaper over there, and buying in bulk you can have lots of fun....

You have lots todo my friend, I would look at getting a massive surge protector I know how dodgy your electrics are over in america LOL.

I really dont think 512 RAM is anywhere near enough if you plan to have games like WoW...
The gigabit network card is excessive as most conventional connections (including ones at netcafes) dont go over 100mbit
The CDRW drive is kinda wasted unless you plan to let people burn games or use it as general purpose. But from what I read, it sounds like u want this to be a gaming cafe.
XP home as your OS might be iffy.... Go for XP Pro... its a MUCH better OS for hyperthreading/dual core
And you might wana check out the recent price drops on Pentium 9xx series CPUs and related motherboards, I was aboout to build a Pentium 930 PC for 550 the past weekend

Yeah I found another thing, with better but cheaper.

The one I showed was like $871 CDN for the desktop/monitor/keyboard/mouse combo

Well this one's the same specs, but with XP Pro and Phoenix Recovery instead (which would come in handy a lot).

Also, the video card has 256mb VRam, so 512mb should be enough for cheap. Can't be breaking the bank here. We just went and applied for the loan this mornin'.

Also gigabit ethernet is integrated.
