wow - lots of good books have been said,
Trainspotting - Irvine Welsh is great, i like a lot of the Welsh books (marabou stork nightmares was one of my faves for some reason)
The only Stephen King books i like are "The Dark Tower" series, it was a totally un-King series of books but well written
Good Omens by Neil Gaimen and Terry Pratchett was very funny (i still use the "contains 100% meat™ - suitable for vegetarians)
Life of Pi - was a surprise for me, i had read the reviews and didn't think it was worth reading, then i had it recommended by someone who's opinion i trust and it was amazing, totally pulled me into the book!
obviously LoTR is just the most amazing series of books

I would add to this with:
one of my fave books when i was growing up was "Journey to the West: The Monkey King" by Wu Chen-en
then there's the Frank Herbert "Dune" series that was just enthralling
then there's some great fun authors
Douglas Adams
Stephen Donaldson (chronicles of Thomas Covenant the unbeliever)
Iain M Banks
Ben Elton
Terry Pratchett

I'm actually surprised no one has mention it so far, but what did you all think of the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time? That's another one of my favourites. Excellent insight into the mind of an autistic teenager.

I have loads of favourite books. biggrin.gif

Favourites of mine that have already been mentioned are Life of Pi, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, Good Omens and Douglas Adam's Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy etc (as well as the Meaning of Liff; just fantastic tongue.gif)

I also loved Wicked, Battle Royale, Angry White Pyjamas (to be expected considering it's about martial arts!) Empress Orchid, Wise Children, My Family and Other Animals... I could go on.

What I'm reading at the moment... ah... And the Ass Saw the Angel by Nick Cave, 1001 Paintings You Must See Before you Die, Monkey by Wu Ch'eng-en, Troy: Lord of the Silver Bow by David Gemmell, the Bushido translation of the Hagakure and The Cats of Seroster by Robert Westall. Not all at the same time. tongue.gif

Adams and Pratchett are geniuses. Truly.
I'm rereading Discworld right now and it's all the small touches, like the single ecstatic dung beetle after the horde of elephants has passed. That sort of thing.

You gotta love it.

I love almost any book by Orson Scott Card, especially the Ender Series.

Especially "Ender's Shadow" and "Speaker of the Dead", because they're so unique and very smart.

'The Discworld Series' - Terry Pratchett (Although 'Nightwatch' and 'Reaper Man' were my favorites by far.)
'The Vampire Chronicles' - Anne Rice (Rich detail cannot be done better than Anne.)
'Fight Club' and 'Survivor' - Chuck Palahniuk (To answer a previous post, the book was 20x better than the movie)
'Memoirs of a Geisha' - Arthur Golden (I sobbed at the end, damn it!)
'In the Country of the Blind' - Michael Flynn
'On the Road' - Jack Keorack
'The Bell Jar' - Sylvia Plath (you feel crazy along with the book by the end of it)
Various classics that I will read over and over again; The Odyssey, The Iliad, Antigone, A Midsummer's Night Dream, Canterbury Tales, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.

I'm reading "A child called it" and so far it's a very good book
One of my favorites was "One flew over the cuckoo's nest" which is about schizophrenic psychotic people in a mental hospital who try to escape

I have not read Pyramids, in fact, I've never heard of it? I'm working on 'Monstrous Regiment' right now, probably read either 'The Last Continent' or 'The Fifth Elephant' next. biggrin.gif
Gonna be awhile though as I've gotta get through 'Twelfth Night' by Thursday for Western Lit. *winces*

S'really good. You learn all about how clever camels are. Far too clever to let on that they're clever at all...
