I'm so nervous about my wisdom teeth being pulled. Anyone else have theirs removed? How long does it hurt for? 1we8.gif

It's not that bad. I had them taken out awhile back and wasn't on painkillers at all. It does hurt and may bruise a little, but you should be up in less than a day or two.

Did they just numb the area when you had yours removed? Or did they make you sleep through the procedure? blink.gif

I had five teeth taken out 2 of which were wisdom, they knocked me out for it, and told me to get some otc painkillers, never bothered to take them in the end, it hurt like hell for the first hour then i got used to it, but then again i have a high pain threshold, ask and see if you can get some good painkillers like codeine

Oh, lucky you. sad.gif *sarcasm* I've never got it done so I can't really describe the process to you. 1we8.gif Good luck though, hopefully it doesn't hurt that much.

Well I haven't had mine removed but I've had plenty of dental procedures plus had friends whose had it done tongue.gif As far as the length goes it could take anywhere from a week to two weeks for the swelling to go down and the pain to subside depending on your healing ability. It also greatly depends on if they're impacted or not. Now if you don't have to get put to sleep I don't reccomend doing it. Problem is while yes, you have to live through the shots and other things when you are asleep you cannot tell them if you aren't numbed enough so when you wake up and you aren't... I hear it doesn't feel too good. If you ask for pain meds dentists usually give out codine like candy. The nice thing about codine is that it's a somewhat powerful painkiller but usually doesn't give you extreme side effects like dizziness, hot flashes, or a ummm... opiate high tongue.gif At least I've never experienced it with that. For food I reccomend grilled cheese and tomato soup. You should dip the grilled cheese in the soup to make it softer so you don't have to chew. That one works for most dental ailments be it braces, gum surgery, or other nasty things like that tongue.gif Good luck!!

They made me sleep...but they numbed me too, and gave me painkillers after. The cheeks were more of a problem than the pain for me tongue.gif

The worst part for me was that when I tried to take more painkillers, I had to take them with food, and having a mouth full of bloody gauze made it difficult to chew/swallow. A shake was what worked best for me. Just put the spoon as far back as you can and turn it over.

Hope everything went Ok, I assume they were already pulled by now. I still have mine, all 3 of them. They usually don't bother me, but I need to have them removed just the same. It freaks me out a little, cause they put you to sleep. And I've heard of too many horror stories with wisdom teeth. It's the stuff nightmares get made off. But I also heard plenty of stories of people that were fine the next day. I guess it all depends. So I'll have to take a chance and just get it over with. Hope your recovery will go smooth.

I got all four of my wisdom teeth through recently and although they hurt as they came through, they don't now so fingers crossed they will be staying where they are tongue.gif .

Hope all went well Hawk thumbsup.gif

They put me out for awhile. I had to get six teeth, which include four of my wisdom teeth, in preparation for jaw surgery, which I'm having on Wednesday. unsure.gif

Yeah, its been a long time.

I consented to local anesthesia and general anesthesia (Like hell would I want to be awake), sadly it was intravenously (I hate needles). So they prick me with the IV in the back of the hand (Took him a while to find the vein, and I prefer having them do it there rather than the arm). When they start the flow I talk a bit about football with the guy, his kids go to another school in our conference. Next thing I know, I'm awake with gauze in my mouth.

We came home, I fell asleep for a bit, woke up, changed gauze, watched Day after Tomorrow, changed gauze, continued watching Day After Tomorrow, changed gauze, continued watching Day After Tomorrow, changed gauze, continued watching Day After Tomorrow... whatever, for like 2-3 hours. I think the bleeding has subsided enough, its still oozing, but its not bad. Right now I'm eating ice cream because I'm extremely hungry, I haven't had food in 19 hours. My teeth hurt, but I've got some pain killers (Vikanen and some other stuff), I couldn't down them earlier because my mouth was so numb, including my tongue, but now I can. Its not that painful. smile.gif It hurts a bit, but some pulled muscles in the past have hurt more.

Why did they bleed so much? When I had all 4 of mine out (each had impacted) they used disolving stitches and I didn't have any blood in my mouth and I didn't have any gauze.

Just remember after you eat wash your mouth with salty water to things don't get infected and all yucky.

How many did you get taken out?

All four, it bled for about 3 hours, and may have just been oozing the whole time. Only thing that is still numb right now is my lower lip and the area below that, lol. I hate it though 1we8.gif

I should probably do that salty water shit. I know I've got something to protect against infections... One of the three meds they gave me, but I should do it anyways.

It hurt like hell to eat ice cream. I hope today is the worst, because its not unbearable, but I hate being unable to eat. 1we8.gif Next item I try is pudding or apple sauce. 1we8.gif

oh god didn't they tell you any information?? I mean seriously they should tell you to ONLY eat luke warm food, preferably liquid for at least 3 days.
Soup is your friend wink.gif

And you shouldn't need any anti-biotics unless you aren't going to do the salty water thing after you eat anything.
They gave me anti-biotics while I was asleep and had a huge allergic reaction to it (they gave me the anti-biotics that are for people who have allergies lol), and they said it's fine to not have anti-biotics as long as I did the salty water thing.
If you've started the anti-biotics though... don't stop. That's bad tongue.gif

The thing they gave me suggested mushy/watery food, and everyone says Ice cream. I had some soup, wasn't much better. It was Cream of Potato, and was really creamy, the potato bits didn't cause any problems.

I'd rather take the antibiotics and not have to worry about infections as much than to not take antibiotics. Its just another safety net 1we8.gif I do the salt water + baking soda stuff (1/2 tsp of each in a warm glass of water).

There is NO way I'll be able to sustain myself eating only soups over the next 2-3 days sad.gif

Its not that bad afterwards, at least mine aren't. I believe that is because my teeth were so close to the surface. Make sure to take general anesthesia, way better than only taking local. It would suck to be awake for the half hour they are digging/messing around in your mouth.
