Okay, so I've been working this summer and want to put some of the money towards a new computer. I don't need some beastly $5000 computer, but I want something decent. I've been looking into it and this is what I've been thinking about getting:

-Case
-Mobo
-Processor
-RAM
-Power Supply
-Hard Drive
-Disc Drive
-Graphics Card OR Graphics Card
Which one would be better, DX10 if I get Vista DX9 if XP?

I already have Monitor, Speakers, Keyboard, Mouse.

Anything else I need?

I'm either going to get Vista or XP. Not positive yet, is there one that you would recommend over the other? I heard Vista is a pig with your resources, but I also know they are phasing out XP. Any help would be appreciated as I am new with this whole building a computer thing and I've already needed help to even get me to this point. unsure.gif

For the graphics card, I'd go with the GS. It has a 256bit bus compared to the GTS's 128.

I'd personally recommend this as a processor. $60 more, but it's much better, easy to overclock as well. The 8600 isn't a bad card, for the price. I'd probably take it.

And for Vista/XP, I'd keep XP for now, and upgrade down the road. I absolutely hated Vista, and downgraded to XP on my laptop.

If he upgrades the processor I suggest getting a E6*50 model. It will overclock much better. wink.gif Only downside is you need better RAM.

yup, hawk is right about the E6550 smile.gif

I will fix up that list and make it better tomorrow, I have to go to bed, I have to wake up for school in an hour and a half, so

I see a few things that need work

possibly CPU, video card, dvd drive, possibly the motherboard since I recommend staying away from non-intel chipset boards, and possibly the ram

7900GS > 8600GTS but it doesnt have DX10 support, so I recommend getting a cheap 8800GTS for around 240-250. I just bought my eVGA 8800GTS 320mb Superclocked for 244$, 264$ shipped after tax from dell.com (heh yes, dell was cheaper than everywhere else

People say Vista has alot of security issues but my dad uses it and it doesn't seem like its a pig. I think Vista is bad for gaming though as people are expierencing problems with MapleStory and somewhat GunZ Online. On the other hand XP is decent.

Actually Maplestory is working fine on Windows Vista. People are only bitching because they are unable to hack on Maplestory when using Vista. I am contemplating upgrading a portion of my laptop back to Vista.

Yeah, my laptop came with Vista Home Premium and I downgraded to XP SP2 a couple of months ago.

I can make it a bit cheaper, but its not recommended because you'll lose too much quality, unless you're not gaming on it, then I can cheapen up the video card a bit
