I'm not sure if anyone has seen this anywhere else (I have seen this twice), but why do restaurants insist on adding "Buffalo" in front of Chicken when naming some foods?

Namely:
Buffalo Chicken Burger

What the heck?

This is a Buffalo.

This is a Chicken.

There is no buffalo in a "Buffalo Chicken Burger", if I am correct in my thinking. The two just don't mix. So, WTF?

Buffalo wings are named after the city of Buffalo, New York where they originated. In the Buffalo, New York area, the local residents do not refer to them as "Buffalo Wings". They are usually referred to as "Wings" or "Chicken Wings". The appellation "Buffalo" is now commonly applied to foods other than wings, such as Chicken fingers, Chicken nuggets, Popcorn Chicken, et cetera, that are seasoned with the Buffalo style sauce or variations of it.

"Buffalo" implies that it is made with "Buffalo" style sauce, like the original "Buffalo Wings," as Sunscorch said, but I'd also add that the sauce was orginally made with Frank's Red Hot Sauce.

The best hot sauce in the god damn world. :>
(It goes great with plain tortilla chips.)

What scorch said. It's also like the most amazing thing in the world and one of the foods I will eat with jalapenos on it to make it even spicier biggrin.gif It gives me heart burn but frankly it's worth it. Go try it sometime but... uhhh... not if you can't take spicy :\ Though it'd be funny to watch if you couldn't.

Well, Joe's wikianswer could be correct.

Or it could be that when the mighty Buffalo and the Chicken come together, they produce some Spice-y Poultry!

You decide.
