Why not make a supercomputer?

QUOTE
When most of us arrived home with our recently purchased PS3, we couldn't wait to start annihilating aliens in Resistance: Fall of Man or kicking butt kung fu-style in Virtua Fighter 5. Not astrophysicist Gaurav Khanna - he used his to build a supercomputer.

Khanna now owns a total of 16 PS3 consoles, all linked together to provide the same computing power as a 400-node supercomputer. His set up, which he calls a 'gravity grid', is used to simulate the activity of very large black holes for the Physics Department at the University of Massachusetts.

Great idea. tongue.gif

It's a shame that as of now, that's really the only practical use of the PS3.

Someone always has to go and turn it into a console war tongue.gif

That statement is also incorrect thumbsup.gif

Over the next 12 months the PS3 is going to piss all over the 360. tongue.gif I personally guarantee it. biggrin.gif

I didn't mean it like that. tongue.gif
But everything is still so unpolished for the PS3, it seems that turning it into a supercomputer is the best use of it's potential. wink.gif
I'm a firm supporter of the PSWii60 in the console "wars." smile.gif

Wow tongue.gif. Awesome tongue.gif. This makes the concept of a super computer available to the common man (almost tongue.gif).

I hope so because I need a reason to buy one. I'm an avid RPG fan and that is the one genre of game the PS3 is lacking in at the moment.

Lost Odyssey is out Friday though! Oh yeah! Been waiting ages for that game.

Still a bit out of the average persons price range laugh.gif

This is pretty interesting and a good use of your spare systems I suppose.

It'd be neat to have a mineral oil-cooled PS3. tongue.gif

I'll keep it up for you. I made a mistake that I didn't notice, but I'm also going to try and pull the "I'm tired" defense. I just woke up from a 2 hour long nap and got on my computer. Some posts will have errors.

And I think the first only should be "be"... or maybe the second.

Damn, we're going to need some ridiculous long cable, and somehow shark/whale proof it. ohmy.gif

You people aren't thinking big enough! Cable, pssh! What we need are a few satellites and some very good wireless whatsits happy.gif. Cable free! Each element of our super computer would be portable tongue.gif. Think Hydro can get working on a codex satellite? I mean we must be getting some money from those ads at the top..

That's PERFECT. ohmy.gif We can carry our PS3s all over and set up our supercomputer at any time. ohmy.gif Like Spies... ohmy.gif

Of course we'll need a tv of some sort and/or a power outlet. So, SUPERCOMPUTER ALMOST ANYWHERE AT ALMOST ANYTIME. ohmy.gif ohmy.gif

Lol, seriously though... I don't see the point in having a supercomputer unless you're in the military or something... or want to start a nuclear war with the rest of the world wink.gif
