Besides being mammals, they aren't related. Ferrets are intelligent and... not really a rodent. I mean, they are, but not in the same sense that hamsters and mice are. Probably closer to weasels, minks, and otters.

My mom had a ferret when she was younger. It got into the air vents, got chopped up by a fan and sat there for three days before anyone could find him.
She won't let me get one of my own.

Ferrets, from what I hear, are quite destructive. If they see something that can be ripped open/apart, they will definitely do it. That's why you need to buy a bunch of toys to keep it occupied.
I considered a ferret as a pet but settled on a guinea pig.

also ferrets are illegal in california cause if too many get out into the wild they might threaten the local wildlife like rabbits and stuff you know.
