Good for him. He'll probably be a more mentally healthy, well rounded freethinker if he is to drop out of school. He'll probably learn much more playing guitar hero alone than he would learning by rote at school.

If he has the skill to compete, I would support him. Few people are able to stay in the scene for over a few years, but those who can adapt and transfer over into other games can make good money.

Agreed.
Pro players from Counter-Strike teams have moved on from Counter-Strike 1.6 and into the Counter-Strike: Source scene.
Most pro players play for the CGS and are on a contract which ensures they are paid atleast $30,000 each anually regardless of winning or losing any events. Any additional prize money belongs to the team and is split accordingly.

It's very possible for a team to make a comfortable $250,000 - $300,000 a year, especially if they're good (this is approx $60,000 a player, plus the $30,000 from the contract. That's $90,000 per player in that team a year).
You may think the gaming living wont last long but competitive counter-strike was played for a good 8 years, CSS has just bloomed and CSPromod is currently in development. In my opinion pro gamers are set for life and eSports is rapidly growing.
