So, as I sit here in one of the lounges on campus with my friends, I've begun to wonder.

We are sitting here watching Twilight (gag) and the girls are obsessing over it. They recently saw New Moon and now they are watching the first one. Why am I here? Because I didn't want to sit in my dorm any longer.

Now, heres my question:

Why is it perfectly fine for a girl to have a poster of a half-naked guy in their room (in this case, it's Jacob and Edward), but it's NOT okay for a guy to have a poster of a half-naked girl?

Heres the case:

Paige has a poster of Edward (without a shirt on) over her bed in her dorm. However, if her boyfriend, Daniel, was to have a picture of say, Kristen Stewart (Bella) over his bed, or even in his room, she'd get pissed and tell him to take it down.

So why the double standard, ladies?

Welcome to the world of girls! They love double standards. Guys have to follow the rules, but the rules never apply to them. Dont even imagine trying to tell them that you dont like something they did, because instead of you just wishing they didnt do it, it either is

A) Your insecure, and need to let her have her freedome
B) You find everything wrong with her, and she just isnt good enough for you, and shes a terrible gf, etc etc.
C) All of the above
D) Wildcard!

Of course. Thanks to Double Standards, we will see alot of girls post that they are not like this all. Do not be fooled.

I don't really have an answer for you, but it is interesting to see all these threads about girls/women. Are the majority of people on Neocodex males between the ages of 15 and 25? A lot of the females described seem to be *girls* and not *women*, hence the age group guess based on maturity levels.

I find issues of gender, gender roles and conditioning very interesting.

Why is it socially acceptable for a man to watch/own porn and masturbate, but not a woman?
Why are restrooms divided by gender?
Why is it ok for a straight woman to go to a female strip club but not ok for a straight man to go to a male strip club?
Why isn't it socially acceptable for men to wear skirts? On a hot day the breeze can be nice.
Why can a little girl wear boy clothes and it's cute, but when a little boy wears girl clothes it borders on child abuse?
Why is it that a woman in a male-dominated field has to be literally the bestin order to be respected, but a man in a female-dominated field is typically paid more and promoted more quickly regardless of his abilities?

1)Its not socially acceptable for either to.
2)Because Girls wont go to the bathroom with guys
3)Because the opposite gender has no issues with the other side being homosexual (Considered hot). Femals have issues with Females going to female strip clubs
4)Dude. No one wants to see that, put it away
5)Its not child abuse, it just points to gender confusion...
6)Because females are soft of the person they are sleeping with.

A lot of this has to do with the role of religion in the united states. Another factor is how society (may have roots in religion) expects us to act, a man must be the dominate, tough, no emotion, etc. Women are supposed to sensitve, nurturing, weak, togetherness, etc. This just the few things our society promotes in gender even though they aren't really true it just is how it is.

I admit doing Double Standards. And I know that it is not always fair. So I try to think more logical but it is not always easy. For example I want to go out with other male friends but when my boyfriend wants to meet other girls I don't like that ^^ I know it's stupid, so I try to accept it.
But honestly I wouldn't mind some kind of poster xD

True, there are Double Standarts on both sides ;)

sexist?

u just want especially good treatment WITHOUT treating us any better

u want sexual equality? courts will always treat females better. u want sexual equality? why do women get a free pass at earning cash just by offering sex? u want sexual equality? guys talk the same offensive way towards individuals from both genders, with the danger of having a bruised ego if he doesn't talk such to his male targets, while is considered offensive when he DOES talk such to female targets. u want sexual equality? or do you just want improvements to yourself without consideration to what you already have and what others are going through? what is sexual equality? does it ensure I will have an equal chance of getting my kids if i go through a divorce? will i be able to show my hairy body one day and ask for money for sex?

you girls already have enough freedom going around calling us so many names without us saying a thing in return. get over it. if we really had sexual equality we'd be complaining as much about u as u were us. would you want that?

sexual segregation exists because of biological and physical differences in the physical bodies of the two sexes, due to a chemical difference in development which also causes a mentality separation of both sides.

throw a male and a female baby on an island without any sort of external influence, and they'll still grow up that way. it's PHYSICAL. doesn't excuse EVERYTHING that guys do, but it will be around like the sun will shine. so stop whining. u can't stamp it out. not without pulling off the gonads of every single guy in the world.

so stop being so bloody sensitive. sexism exists because it has to. one day when we merge into big pink unisex slugs, sexism will go away by itself.

go burn ur bra if u have to, stop pointing out this and trying to be different just because u're trying to show it's wrong. we all know it's there, and not everyone on the other side likes being there either. so shhhhhhhhhhh. enough posts about this.

i'm treating u equal, which is why i'm expecting better intellectual posts from you instead of just reruns of the same shit over and over. let's have a good old discussion of established topics instead of having detours.

I second that!
Why is it the social norm that guys stand up for girls when they leave the table to use the restroom?
Open the door for the girl?
Carry their purse when we go shopping?
Girls, please don't complain.
We go out of our way for you more than you tend to recognize.

People are essentially jealous creatures of varying degrees. You might not be able to put up a poster of Kristen Stewart, because no matter what she says, even if she's a fan of Kristen, it makes your girlfriend jealous. Even if it's just a teeny bit. If you ACTUALLY feel threatened by Edward Cullen's drawn on 6-pack, then you should mention it to her. If you're fine, just let it go. Some things are not worth fighting about.

There are a lot of double standards. But that's just because boys and girls are socialized differently. I blame neither gender. Girls have their downfalls, and boys do too. Both do a lot of things that piss off their boyfriend/girlfriend, and honestly, most people probably do that shit on purpose. I can't tell you how much it pleases me to antagonize my sweetie. I love to do things I know will be annoying, because it's satisfying to get a reaction. Good times.

I don't think this board is sexist. I just think girls can be confusing to guys, and there are a lot of guys around here. It's hard not to be frustrated at times when it comes to the opposite sex.

sexist? u just want especially good treatment WITHOUT treating us any better.

I think the fact a lot more women sleep around now compared to 40 years ago, and tolerate porn used both by their BF or used in general, proves that women are highly tolerent of men.

The reason men think they do it tough is because all of their institutions and preconceived notions about society established over the past 1000 years are now being challenged by 100 years of women's lib. Maybe it's just that men aren't very good at accepting change.

Although I do concede that young males need proper role models. Sporting figures aren't this as the sex scandals have proven time and time again. With marriages crumbling (I blame that on too higher standards by both sexes, too easy to get married, too easy to get out, and pre-marital sex) many displaced young males don't have a fatherly figure. Institutions that used to provide this- like scouts or church groups- remain under suspicion because of a history of paedophiles using them to target children.

And yes, a lot of what I've read on this topic is sexist.

u want sexual equality? courts will always treat females better.

No, rape cases mostly either never go to court, or the ones that do it is very hard to prove. Men designed the court system and it sits in their favour. A more women-driven model would be the way Corie courts work in Australia, where there's a lot more discussion within the Aboriginal community groups about the crime and punishment is agreed to rather than forced upon the accused. Also, provocation was a defence in some Australian court rooms until five years ago to domestic violence. The legal system is historically sexist in the west.

u want sexual equality? why do women get a free pass at earning cash just by offering sex?

A while back there was an article in the free newspaper about Paris Hilton being the new feminist. No, she's just a ho. And so is Kim Kardishan. They're sluts. But men can be sluts too, it's just society label it otherwise.

u want sexual equality? or do you just want improvements to yourself without consideration to what you already have and what others are going through? what is sexual equality? does it ensure I will have an equal chance of getting my kids if i go through a divorce? will i be able to show my hairy body one day and ask for money for sex?

You seen to be arguing that women have the upper hand when they can sell their bodies for sex. The overwhelming evidence is that women who appear in porn and go into prostition and other parts of the sex industry, do so because they need the money and they can't get it any other way; or they were sexually abused as children. Jenna Jamerson was abused. So was Katie Price. If they had a choice they wouldn't go into the sex industry. Or, if they wern't abused and society had adequate support mechinisms for victims of child abuse, then there would be a lot less women out there like Jenna Jamerson. The sex industry only exists because men demand it. If all men stopped using porn tomorrow, stopped visiting strip clubs, stopped paying prostitutes, there would be no market and no supply. I believe legislatively the best way to deal with prostitution is to put liability on the clients- like in Sweden. Use a prostitute over there, and YOU get prosecuted.

Some women use "giggalos". But society still stigmatizes women who seek out sex as skanks and hoes. Yes, I called Paris and Kim hoes, and I don't appologise- sex shouldn't be before marriage/civil unions, for both genders. It would solve a lot of problems. Women also tend to get emotionally attached more easily when having sex with someone, they don't do it for the same reasons men do.

Australian laws have changed to encourage courts to give more equal custody. If you have an issue with the legislation in your area concerning apportionment of custody, I suggest you join a fathers' group that lobbies governments on that issue, or do lobbying yourself. Primarily why women get custody is historical, that women do most rearing of children.

sexual segregation exists because of biological and physical differences in the physical bodies of the two sexes, due to a chemical difference in development which also causes a mentality separation of both sides...throw a male and a female baby on an island without any sort of external influence, and they'll still grow up that way. it's PHYSICAL. doesn't excuse EVERYTHING that guys do, but it will be around like the sun will shine. so stop whining. u can't stamp it out. not without pulling off the gonads of every single guy in the world.

Women and men reproductive functions have devoloped over 1000's of years. Men to be the hunters and gatherers, women to rear the young. That's undisputable. It's why we have seperate events in the olympics so women have a chance at winning. But arguing women can't do SOMEthings because of that fails. It fails because women have been proving that argument wrong for 80 years. Men said "women are sensitive, they need makeup breaks, blah blah" in the 1950s in pamphlets on management. Yeah, bullcrap. Women are more sensitive. Yes. But we can do the vast majority of professions, and are better than men in a number of professions. Women can do engeneering. Computer programming. They can be world leaders. They can drive trains. What they're not so good at is certain physical jobs or jobs that require withstanding high temperatures. Women aren't so good at being solar car drivers where the temp gets to 60c inside. Or doing train track work on 40c days, bashing the tracks back in place when they warp. Or being brickies. But as has been proven, women dominate the education sector. The key reason women aren't in more places is because, men developed the modern working environmnet over a period of 150 years and it is not conductive to women. When women go have children, they lose their position. When they try to balance work and child rearing, they comprimise their career. Employers don't provide maternity leave, nor child care services. Work places are therefore stacked against women, and it probably starts at the hiring stage- when some employers judge potential female employees based on when they're likely to need time off to have children (without saying it of course)

so stop being so bloody sensitive. sexism exists because it has to. one day when we merge into big pink unisex slugs, sexism will go away by itself.

Sexism is a product of society and conditioning, like racism and other forms of bigotry. Unless you would argue that racism has to exist, as does other forms of bigotry.

go burn ur bra if u have to,

Bra burning is SOOooo 1974...and I like mine thank you ;) Besides, now we have the internet, equal opportunity legislation and litigation.

we all know it's there, and not everyone on the other side likes being there either. so shhhhhhhhhhh.

Many men go through sex change operations, not many women go through them tho...

This is much more common/acceptable than it used to be, from what I've seen. Sexual repression is a bitch, and sometimes you just have to let the juices fly.

Why are restrooms divided by gender?

So we don't peek at each others' naughty parts, silly. Also, if you own a family establishment, you don't want couples going into the same restroom.

Why is it ok for a straight woman to go to a female strip club but not ok for a straight man to go to a male strip club?

The female body is a thing of beauty to be appreciated... and men's bodies are more about utility.... although I agree that people should loosen up.

Why isn't it socially acceptable for men to wear skirts? On a hot day the breeze can be nice.

KILTS! My people wear them! It's awesome!

Why can a little girl wear boy clothes and it's cute, but when a little boy wears girl clothes it borders on child abuse?

Because people are closed-minded to gender roles?

Why is it that a woman in a male-dominated field has to be literally the bestin order to be respected, but a man in a female-dominated field is typically paid more and promoted more quickly regardless of his abilities?

This happens? I usually see women getting nothing-promotions based on looks and the boss being a man. Maybe I need to switch fields.
