In October in Orange County, Calif., Billy Joe Johnson, who had just been convicted of murder as a hit man for a white supremacist gang, begged the judge and jury, in all sincerity, to sentence him to death. Johnson knew that those on California's death row get individual cells and better telephone access, nicer contact-visit arrangements, and more personal-property privileges than ordinary inmates. The Los Angeles Times reported that the state's spending per death-row inmate is almost three times that for other inmates. The current death-row census totals 685, but because of legal issues, only 13 have been executed since 1977 (compared to 71 death-row fatalities from other causes). In fact, Johnson was so eager to be put on death row that he tried to confess to two murders that no one yet knew about. [Los Angeles Times, 11-11-09]

Wow a few things stuck me with this one....

Firstly why don't the people on death row actually die?

If hes a white supremacist though I totally understand why hes asked for the chair....he have gotten a hell of a time every day in prison I bet.

I also think that he's just trying to 'skate' by. What I'm a little concerned about is why the people on death row aren't getting killed... think of how much of our US Tax dollars are going to them just so they can sit there and do nothing, enjoying the time they have left..

No, most gangs are divided based on race. He would have had 2 big gangs for him to join

Wow only 13?? That sniper guy was just executed the other day. Is he the 13th? What do they mean by "compared to 71 death-row fatalities from other causes"?

Looks like people are voting for no death penalty. I think it's good because they can get a chance to repent to god if they are religious. But I don't know if that repentance will be accepted.

Stabbings, suicides, "suicides," etc. When you have a population that's heavy in criminals, chances are good that crimes will occur.

Well it depends on their religion.
In Christianity, if you repent for your sins. You'll be good to go.
Paul, one of Jesus' diciples used to be known as Saul - someone who hated Christians, even to the point of murder. He was forgiven... even became one of Jesus' apostles. I can go into more detail... but then I'd be getting off topic.

"Meanwhile, Saul was uttering threats with every breath and was eager to kill the Lord's followers."

A bit of a reflection on the sad state of our prisons. So few of the people on death row actually die, he's a smart guy. Although he made it a little too obvious.

Yay, Bible

Cor. 14:34 --- Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

Deuteronomy 22:28-29 --- If a man is caught in the act of raping a young woman who is not engaged, he must pay fifty pieces of silver to her father. Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her.

Yeah, that's retarded and almost as bullshitty as Republicans who are all for the death pentalty, then turn around and talk about how precious life is when it comes to women terminating unwanted pregnancies. This double standard rubbish knows no party, my friends. You either value life, ALL LIFE, or you don't.

I don't.
So I feel criminals should have NO choice in their fate. Their victims never had a choice. Why should they?

One of the largest gangs in prisons is the Aryan Brotherhood. I'm sure he'd fit right in.

There's worse. For instance, the Song of Songs, which is pretty much the ancient equivalent of pornography.

Especially when they have nothing left to lose.

I love how every other execution in 2009 is basically Texas.

An eye for an eye down here.

On topic: The guy didn't want to spend a crap load of time in jail, so he went for the alternate route. Ask for the death penalty (which he probably won't receive, because he'll probably die before they actually decide to get him), and live the rest of his life as if nothing really happened.

You should read the part where Lot's daughters get him drunk and sleep with him after the Lord destroys Sodom and Gomorrah, so that his seed will be spread or something. =/ I always found that really bizarre... Lot's wife gets to be salt for looking over her shoulder but her daughters can engage in pre-marital incestuous sex with God's blessing.

I can quote sections of Darwinist thinking completely out of context and make the school of thought look like a gigantic sack of bullshit too.

Can we not go there? I thought we had a bit more respect for intellectual integrity than that.

Anything can be taken out of context. But I do agree that we should refocus on the titled topic.

And further shit up a perfectly viable thread? Oh, whatever.

The age in which those quotes were written is substantially different to the one we live in today - different values were mainstream and the ideologies in which they were held in stead would widely be considered barbaric or primitive by today's society purely for the fact that we live in an age of unparalleled intellectual freedom, riding on the back of almost four hundred years worth of collective knowledge.

Those laws were written for that age, which arguably had very different issues and situations to this age that we live in, and not being experienced in the geopolitical and social climate of such age, it is utterly folly to draw absolute borders around such quotes and demeaning to a conducive atmosphere of intellectual discussion and debate to assert your own personal opinions through such fragmented sources.

In any stretch, taking such quotes out of context only furthers to spurn the less intellectually capable into researching and founding their own educated opinions by devaluing a largely significant historical source from a 'shock and awe' approach. I remember enough of you to know this is an atmosphere you certainly don't want to cultivate. It's like quoting portions on the Dionysia out of context and calling the Athenians nutters for having a festival where they walked around with giant wooden dicks for a day or two - when there's so much more under the surface of both sources that such quotes only seek to demean in the favor of upholding or reinforcing personal opinions and beliefs.

All up, it's not cool, man. :(
