wacom tablets are generally pricey - i got my intuos4 L for around 400$, but since it was part of a job i dont really care :)
the bamboo's are less pricey and still pretty good (with less nifty tricks ofcourse) - they're more for those who just want to try it out on a not-so-regular basis
since it's pretty useful for my job, this thing is really just about what i needed :)

It looks cool, but I would never buy a tablet for the simple fact that I can't draw in any medium.
I do wish I were more artistic though.

I have a Wacom Bamboo it is very good for my Hobby, I couldn't afford a Intuos 4.
And for the things I use the Tablet it is pretty awsome, I had a Trust Tablet before and Wacom is soooo much better

I have the Intuos3 and love it. Was never really a big fan of the Bamboo series, I felt they were more for 'fun' that actual resourcefulness. I can't get the accuracy that I need with the Bamboo. It's definitely worth the price, whether it's for a hobby, school or a job.

Is this what people use to make webcomics?

I got myself a Bamboo model. What writing utility do you use?

Yep. Lots of digital artists use them, too.

I've got an Intuos3; it's about 4 years old now, and it's held up except for the pen, which is only the grip falling off. I love it.

I have a question isn't it better to get a tablet pc rather than an ipad(unless you jailbreak it) and wacomm since it would generally be cheaper and can do more functions? Plus there would be more options

Umm... Tablet PCs suck too much for something that requires this much precision. Feel free to try naming one that would actually be able to handle this kind of work.

not true, bcz you use wacoms generally for artistic purposes (it's designed for that as well)
one of the great things of wacoms is the enormous precision of pressure of the pen, especially with the intuos 4, which is a must-have for artistic use with the pc (such as digital painting, 3D sculpting, modifying pictures, etc)

I see so it only excels at precision so its more of a single use kinda device. more on for professionals then. and i can't give any good examples now but when its October there should be a lot of very good table pc on the market by then.

Tablet PC's are meant for portability and on the go notes and such. Good for contractors, architects, people who need to go out on site and do a quick scratch.

The intuos is for art and design. That's what it should be used for.

Useful till the moment you stop drawing and want to
do something that actually makes money.

Most of the "money-making" art related professions rarely
call the need of a tablet, or drawing for that matter, atmost some
quick sketching and then its off to mouse + pen tool. Tablet +
illustrator is just straight up annoying, and it makes no sense
to design anywhere else. My tablet just collects dust.

It is not to say that its not useful as a hobby tool.

Of those 4, only digital art and maybe 3D texturing
would find any use for a tablet.

GD is mostly layout and typography, the only "drawing" involves
probably logos and wordmarks which is done in illustrator and needs to
be simple enough that it makes sense to use a mouse. Plus tablet in
illustrator is just so hard to coordinate. Fact is... 80% of GDs
don't even know how to draw, just isn't really required anymore.
Good as a basic training though.

Web tries to drop everything into flash or HTML/CSS for performance.
