Mmmkay, so I already have a relatively good laptop and a great dekstop for gaming. I'm a junior in college and I was bringing my laptop to school to type notes/generally fuck around on Facebook in class, but it's honestly too cumbersome for me to lug around all day now that I added two extra classes to my schedule (and I'm not even allowed to use a computer in those two classes) so I'm looking into getting a netbook. I'm thinking about this one and a couple of others. One of the main differences in the ones I'm considering at the moment is that one comes with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and the other comes with Windows 7 Home Premium. I'm not really well versed when it comes to shit like this, but from what I read that the main difference between the two is that with the 64-bit, Windows can read/use more than 3.5 GB of RAM. I'm going to eventually want to upgrade from 2GB to 4GB, so I guess it's essential for me to have 64-bit, then? If I get the one with 32-bit will I be able to easily upgrade to 64-bit later? Would it be easier if I upgraded it right when I get the netbook rather than later?

Or just any good netbook suggestions? I prefer a backlit keyboard and something 4lb or under and I have like $700 to spend.

Sorry for this wall of text.

Netbooks and laptops in general can be quite a hassle to customize, as opposed to a typical PC desktop. So I'd suggest getting the best features that you can afford in one go, rather than planning on customizing it later.

For the 32 and 64-bit issue, if you do need the RAM then go for it. From what I suspect you're going to play games with your netbook--since that really is just the "practical" reason to upgrade to a 64-bit.

and as the usual, no Gateways/Compaqs.

As long as your laptop isn't HP, you should easily be able to reformat to the 64 bit version of windows 7.

32 bit can read up to 3GB/ram. 64 bit can read more.. depends how many slots your netbook can hold in the RAM compartment x_x

Even if you get a 64bit but only have 1 ram slot the most you can hold is the biggest increment of RAM available for 1 slot. Theyre really expensive too. I was looking into getting 4GB ram for my netbook and it costs about 200$ on newegg x__x;

It's up to you and whether or not you think it's worth it. Processor on your netbook is going to suck no matter what though so I don't think you should worry too much. Just use it for the bare necessities... and don't build too much shit on farmville otherwise it will lag like a mother fucker regardless of ram. XD

Change your title. You have vista there.

The longer you wait to upgrade, the lower the price (should) be.

Honestly. The only netbook worth getting is an alienware. I've seen that game play crysis. Others... Not so much. But, you probably want it cheap.

And. There are alot more advantages for using 64bit.

Support for 64bit programs
Improved Security
Everything is faster (Everything gets ~double transfer bandwidth)

Stop misinforming people. I am reporting you.

What does HP have to do with anything? WTF. Any computer in the world can run windows. Period. Regardless of if its hp, dell, gateway, or even fucking apple. It will run windows.

It should be. People are going to be spending money on computers and people are in here feeding them bullshit. They get enough bullshit from their teachers/friends/media. Atleast stop them from getting more bullshit? Its a public service man.

Haha well I can't warn him or invis that. The only thing we can do is say you're wrong and correct him like you did.

Oops! Edited to change Vista to Windows 7.

@ jcrgirl, the main one I'm considering says it can hold up to 8GB, so I'd assume it has 4 slots. I've added RAM to my desktop so I'm not too concerned about that part, although I've heard it's a little harder on a netbook.

@ iargue & Lallard; I have a laptop and desktop for gaming, so that kind of graphic performance isn't really important to me when it comes to this netbook. My main concern is something lightweight that isn't slow as balls. I just need to be able to take notes, surf the internet, and maybe play something like Solitaire or whatever without it taking too long to open windows/etc.

Since I just found a coupon that makes the price difference between the one that can do 8GB RAM and has 64-bit and the one that only does 2GB RAM and has 32-bit only like $50 I think I might just go with my first choice.

Thanks for all of your input, guys.

Ew don't get a netbook unless you are a dwarf. It is 2010, no one should have anything less than Windows 7 x64

No
It has 2 slots XD
Maximum is 8GB because you can plug in 2x 4GB Ram chips = $400+
A little research is in order!

The notion is appreciated, but being wrong isn't against the rules. :( A lot of advice when it comes to technological decisions is biased and very open to debate. There might be a solution though!

my point: it's not practical to upgrade from a 32-bit to a 64-bit in the long run. I mean she mentioned looking for something with alot of RAM on a netbook + possibly processing speed (since mentioned "gaming") hence getting a 64-bit would be a better choice.

I don't see which part I screwed her over.

You don't really buy a netbook for gaming though, the majority of netbooks are outfitted with integrated graphics chips equivalent to something simialr to an HD 4200. Besides the power usage of a dedicated graphics card would defeat the purpose of a netbook.

The processor in the link is a low power and low clock speed CPU, definitely not for gaming either, just enough to do basic stuff such as word processing and email.
