The classics are pretty much required (1984, Fahrenheit 451, Catch-22, Old Man and the Sea, Farewell to Arms, Lolita, Great Gatsby to name my favorites). That should keep you busy for quite a while.

Outside of classics, the Dune series, Ender's Game series, anything and everything by Kurt Vonnegut and Isaac Asimov.

I just finished reading Little Bee by Chris Cleave and it was an all right book. It's a post-modernistic story about how the lives of a white mother from Britain and an African refugee named Little Bee intertwine. There is some disturbing imagery at times, but as long as you're ok with that, you may like it. And now I'm reading The Great Gatsby, which I think was already mentioned. I'm just starting it so I can't really make any judgement on it yet.

If you're looking for classics, go by what's already been suggested.  However, are you looking for a specific genre...?  Fantasy, scifi, mystery?

I've also got some great comic recs if you're into that. :)

If you love horror, psychology and mystery, try James Herbert series.

A great read you can just pick up and and effortlessly go through. Was really annoying getting use to the names though. The third was my favorite of the series.

Always Running by Luis Rodriguez. It's a classic story about the insides of urban barrios during the 70s and 80s.

One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest by Ken Kesey
Haunted by Chuck Paluhniuk
Shes Come Undone by Wally Lamb

I had so many names in my head when I clicked this thread and now I can't think of any of them hahah. Anything by Chuck Paluhniuk is usually crazy (in a good way)!

Yeah, dude. And it was a Nathaniel Hawthorn novel. Those are always a ton of fun and enjoyment.

The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns were both amazing. If you like mindless reading that makes you lol, read anything by David Sedaris or Augusten Burroughs.

I just finished reading Jonathon Troppers's book, "Everything Changes" which I found to be a really good read.

It's a little mature and uses some colorful language, but hey, it's adult literature. What can you expect?

Kafka on the Shore is a good one. i found it to be oddly comforting and relaxing. (link)

if you're into Dan Brown, the only book i would recommend of his is Digital Fortress.
Whatever you do, stay away from The Last Symbol... that book... i dont know what to say it was just... argh.. total waste of time.

Catcher in the Rye and Lord of the Flies are books that i had to read for school and i really enjoyed.
While not a novel, The Tragedy of MacBeth is also something i'd recommend.
