Although because of the semi-war I fought like 350+ of the minions before I knew there was a cap, so I got the avie that way

All you have to do to find out is refresh at the win page to find out.... if it works then it will load the same victory page, if it doesnt work then it will tell you, you cant the avatar this way or some shit like that

I got it through normal battling yesterday anyway but it is available now through refreshing.

Yes, if the page lets you refresh without coming up with:

"Error: CHEATER!!!! You won't get an avatar that way! "

Then it can be gained by refreshing.
